They gave a valiant effort, but in the end Ilya Bryzgalov was able to hold Team USA at bay. The Flyers netminder stopped 19 of 22 shots, and a stacked Russian squad led by the New Jersey Devils’ Ilya Kovalchuk finally pulled away with two goals late in the third period for the 5-3 victory…

Heading into last night’s 6-2 loss to the Phillies, San Francisco lefthander Madison Bumgarner was 3-0, and had not allowed more than two runs in six starts – good for a 1.55 earned run average. Afterwards, his Bumgarner’s record was no longer spotless, and his ERA increased to 2.31. One of those the Giants are…

It might feel like longer to some, but almost three years have passed since the Flyers came within two wins of hoisting the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1975. It might feel like longer because that was essentially an entirely different team. One season later the organization gave up on the young stars…

For the seventh time in his career, Terrell Owens is a pro bowler. The first six times were in the National Football League. Most recently it was in the Professional Bowlers Association League. Actually, according to Chris Wesseling of NFL.com (via Deadspin), T.O. is only a semi-pro bowler this time, although the prefix is nothing…

Not many ball players have ever received a rousing ovation for getting thrown out at third base, not the way Ryan Howard did at Citizens Bank Park on Friday night.

There are a lot positive vibes emanating from the NovaCare Complex these days. The Eagles are coming out of a fine-looking draft, players are buying into Chip Kelly’s program, and there is a renewed excitement surrounding the team in general.
They seem to be having fun for the first time in awhile, which brings us to today’s story: Michael Vick versus LeSean McCoy in the 40-yard dash. They could’ve put that on pay-per-view.

This is a story for @FakeWIPCaller. New Eagles quarterback and real WIP caller Matt Barkley will wear the number 2 on his uniform this season, the first player to do so for the franchise since David Akers.

Beyond missing the playoffs and having some obvious needs to fill, the Flyers have a problem. The salary cap is set to decrease from $70.2 million to $64.3 once the new league year begins, and according to one projection, as of today they would be over the threshold by about $3 mil.

There has been some buzz since the Eagles chose Matt Barkley in the fourth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday, as you might expect. For one it defied many of the preconceived notions people held about what works in Chip Kelly’s offense. Also, had Barkley departed USC one year earlier, he might have been a far more heralded prospect, perhaps even a top 10 pick.

Poor Ezequiel Carrera. He was set to be in the dugout and maybe even pinch run or something against his former club over the next two days, but instead Carrera was designated for assignment to make way for everybody’s favorite offseason acquisition.

Every year we try to rationalize or critique the NFL Draft in the days that follow as if some of us had a crystal ball. Sure, the grades sportswriters hand out almost always come with the disclaimer that we won’t really know which picks will pan out for 3-5 years, but that doesn’t stop anybody from guessing.
Having said that, it’s difficult not to feel good about what the Eagles accomplished over the weekend – and I don’t necessarily mean specific players.

The Flyers may have missed the playoffs for only the second time in 18 seasons, but does a 48-game season tell the whole story?
Apr 27, 2013, 2:33 PM EST
Everyone knew the Birds were evaluating quarterbacks in this year’s draft. Eagles brass visited with a enough of them. Hell, Jeffrey Lurie trekked to West Virginia to look at Geno Smith. Then again, not many people had Matt Barkley as one of their targets.
Apr 26, 2013, 9:27 PM EST
We knew the Eagles had to come away from this draft with at least one defensive lineman. They found their man in round three in Bennie Logan.
Apr 26, 2013, 6:59 PM EST
It wasn’t a quarterback, but the Eagles continued to focus on offense in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday.
Apr 26, 2013, 3:31 PM EST
There’s a lot of buzz that Geno Smith is still available, and the Eagles are up third on day two of the NFL Draft. Will they take their quarterback of the future in round two?
Apr 25, 2013, 8:51 PM EST
Last season was a case study in the importance of the offensive line for the Eagles. Not surprisingly, they took the opportunity to fortify the position through the draft.
General manager Howie Roseman stayed put at number four to select Oklahoma offensive tackle Lane Johnson in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night. He will be penciled in to start on the right side from day one, and could eventually supplant Jason Peters on the left.

The Sixers are done (mercifully), the Flyers are playing out the string, and the Phillies are just plain hard to watch at the moment. Now who’s ready to watch Roger Goodell read some names off of index cards?
[Predictions for the Eagles' first-round pick inside.]

Today is the day. What will the Eagles do with the fourth-overall pick in the NFL Draft? We checked with the wisdom of crowds for answers, where we found only more staggering uncertainty.
Apr 24, 2013, 4:58 PM EST
The Phillies were shut out for the third time in eight games on Tuesday night, resulting in a post-game appearance by Cranky Charlie Manuel. Cholly knows it’s going to take more than tough talk to right the ship though, so it’s back to tinkering with the lineup card.
Apr 23, 2013, 5:26 PM EST
One of the top criticisms of the Flyers this year has been the front office’s inability to replace several key players who left during the offseason. Among the key subtractions was Jaromir Jagr, who happens to be making his return to the Wells Fargo Center with the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.
Apr 23, 2013, 3:59 PM EST
We’ve seen a number of former Eagles coming back formally retire as a member of the team of late, from Brian Westbrook to Tra Thomas to the great Brian Dawkins. Leonard Weaver followed suit on Tuesday in a ceremony at the NovaCare Complex.
Apr 23, 2013, 2:55 PM EST
There has been a ton of speculation about the Eagles possibly looking to move down from number four overall in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday. The latest on that story from the Inquirer’s Jeff McLane describes general manager Howie Roseman as actively shopping the pick.
Apr 22, 2013, 3:40 PM EST
Once the Flyers’ season goes quietly into the night this Saturday in Ottawa, goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov will still have seven years remaining on his contract at nearly $40 million. While many are anticipating the front office’s use one of two compliance buyouts to get out from under such a lengthy and expensive deal, the club’s general manager claims that will not be the case.
