As of 6:00 today, it looked like a done deal that Chris Paul was going to be traded to the Lakers. In all likelihood, it was a done deal—New Orleans was gonna send CP3 to the Lakers for forwards Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, then turn around and deal Gasol to the Houston Rockets in exchange for shooting guard Kevin Martin, power forward Luis Scola, backup point Goran Dragic and a 2012 first-round pick belonging to the New York Knicks. Twitter exploded with the news of the trade, leading to the inevitable amount of hand-wrigning about the rich getting richer when we just had a lockout partially caused by the desire for parity between the big and small-market teams.

With the new proposed CBA seemingly poised to pass with overwhelming numbers, it looks like this Friday will finally represent the beginning of what should be the most rapid-fire free agency period in NBA history. While the Sixers haven’t been predicted to be one of the big movers and/or shakers in the off-season brouhaha, there are still plenty of questions facing the team that will need to be answered post haste.

A look back at the expectations that smothered the Phillies in the post-season.
Sep 26, 2011, 2:22 PM EDT
With the season winding to a close (inauspiciously perhaps, but with a trip to the post-season secured at the very least), it’s time to look back at one of the best regular seasons in Philadelphia Phillies history, and the players who made it possible. And as has been the case with each of the contending Phillies teams of recent years, as it normally is with successful baseball squads, it’s not a handful of star players carrying a lesser squad of scrubs—each player has made a contribution of some sort. So it seems only fair when casting our ballot for Phillies team MVP that we go 25 deep, to reward the little guys as well as the big guys, though naturally it’s the big ones you’ll see towards the top.

So by now we’re all done popping champagne over the selection of USC power forward/center Nikola Vucevic at #16 in this year’s draft and we can come back down to earth a little and talk about what we actually have here. It seems like a lot of fans are pretty down on the guy, and I can’t really blame em. At Nikola’s first media interview as a Sixer, I couldn’t even think of anything good to ask him because the only questions I had for him were insulting ones. How do you think a slow, unathletic guy like you is gonna fit in on a team of run-and-gunners? Do you think you’ll be able to beat out Spencer Hawes for the team’s position of skilled-but-largely-ineffective white starting big man? Do the names “Samuel Dalembert” and “Shawn Bradley” mean anything to you?
Jun 22, 2011, 12:51 PM EDT
For a number of reasons—the excellent post-season that just finished, the looming threat of a lockout, the relatively weak pool of talent to choose from—the 2011 NBA draft has been the least-buzzed-about draft the sport has seen in recent memory. Though there’s some intrigue due to the inevitable surge of trade rumors around this time of the year (none the least of which involving our own Andre Iguodala), the lack of any real marquee names and the involvement of a whole lot of unknown quantities in this draft has taken a lot of the sizzle out of it—and that’s for the teams drafting at the top. For our beloved Philadelphia 76ers, selecting this year with the 16th and 50th pick, things are even more muddled and less exciting.
