Some people (mostly non-Philadelphians) don’t get the Phillie Phanatic. Some don’t get the humor that runs through NBC’s 30 Rock. I happen to be a big fan of both, so imagine my geek out at the Phillie Phanatic’s cameo on last night’s new episode, not long after being mentioned on another episode already this season.

In recent games against the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins, the Flyers have given reason for doubt that they’re among the Eastern Conference elite. True, they did beat the Bruins and spoil the Garden’s Stanley Cup raising banner, but a 6-0 loss in mid December and three losses to the Rangers have left the Flyers with plenty to prove.
Unfortunately, they’ll be shorthanded as hell when they try. Already without their towering defensive foil to Boston’s Zdeno Chara, the Flyers lost Jaromir Jagr and Danny Briere yesterday. Will they have enough firepower without them to crack one of the league’s stingiest defenses and its unquestioned top goaltender?
There are a few things in the Flyers favor, and a few factors decidedly against them…

The Flyers’ dual-matinee weekend appeared to get off to a promising start, with a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils. But, injuries disclosed both during and after the game could prove to be more important than their resurgent effort after a poor outing against the Islanders, and Ilya Bryzgalov’s postgame comments may get as much attention as his stellar in-game play.
