Charlie Manuel Talks About His Team's Approach to Hitting

If it's not the most common complaint among Phillies fans about their favorite team, it's certainly near the top of the list.

Why can't the Phillies lineup be more selective at the plate?

Charlie Manuel saw a bit of the same and hopes it's something his team can work on.

In fact, Manuel sat down this morning with the most important catalyst in the Delaware Valley, Jimmy Rollins, to talk approach at the plate.

The Daily News' David Murphy was there and wrote about what Cholly had to say about the team's approach in general and J-Roll specifically. Hitting is something he wants everyone to discuss this spring.

"I want to talk to all of our guys. I want our guys to talk about hitting. I want guys like Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins and Howard and Victorino, I want to have more talk about hitting, talking about getting good balls to hit, not giving away at-bats, things like that. With our pitching and everything like that, we need to score the runs that we're supposed to score. If we have a guy on third base with less than two outs early in the game, we need to score one run. If we have two guys on, we need to make sure we score one run, instead of a guy standing there maybe trying to bust the game open."

As the team ages and may become a tad more complacent, they're going to need to make up for that by being smarter with their ABs.

There are plenty of things to get excited about when the red uniforms start appearing against the green backdrop of Brighthouse Field every spring, but reading/hearing Charlie Manuel talking about hitting has to be one of the best.
