Drama? Intrigue? John Lannan Returns to Phils to Face His Old Team

Jun 17, 2013, 5:45 PM EDT

John Lannan hasn’t pitched for the Phillies since coming down with a knee injury on April 17. He’s come back just in time to start against the Washington Nationals, the club he departed during the offseason to join the Fightins.

For the Nats, this is likely no big deal. Lannan was expendable. He spent most of last season at Triple A after losing a spring training battle for the fifth spot in the rotation, and was non-tendered by the organization at the end of the year. They could have had him for nothing, and left him go.

For Lannan, it’s an opportunity to get a measure of revenge. More importantly, it’s also a chance to help his new club turn things around coming off of an abysmal road trip where they went 3-7.

Since the Phillies are coming off of that sort of trip though, maybe we should just embrace the player-versus-former-team angle.

Did anyone else who reads this board get stuck watching the MASN telecast last night? I live in Maryland so every Phillies/Nats game, I have the pleasure of hearing Bob Carpenter and FP Santangelo.

Those who complain about Tom McCarthy and Chris Wheeler should live a season in my shoes. At least those two guys respect the other team.

    Just last night:
Carpenter implies that Jayson Werth disabled the Phanatic’s bike. “And we like it!”
Carpenter refused to call Philadelphia the “City of Brotherly Love” and Santangelo thanked him.
Carpenter points out that Santangelo nicknamed John Lannan “Longball Lannan” after he hit a home run at Dodger Stadium. “He’s a Phillie now so I never said that.”

These guys are pricks just for the sake of being pricks. It’s fine that they are pro-Nats – they should be. But they should also be pro-fessional.
