ESPN writer picks Phillies as second-worst team in all of baseball

Feb 3, 2014, 3:54 PM EDT

source: Now that the exciting Super Bowl is over and we’re finally done with snow this winter it’s time to get pumped for pitchers and catchers reporting to sunny Clearwater, Florida in just a few days.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Not so fast.

The Super Bowl sucked. It’s still freakin’ snowing. And one ESPN analyst ranks the Phillies as the second worst team in all of baseball?

ESPN’s Sweet Spot rolled out the first of their MLB team rankings (teams 25-30) by David Schoenfield. The only team he ranks lower than your Philadelphia Phils? The Houston Astros.

Now, I’m not going to write the 2014 season off entirely before a pitch is even thrown, but after reading Schoenfield’s take on the Phils, I feel pretty glum. He goes through the moves they’ve made (Byrd, Alfredo Gonzalez, Chooch), the guys they need more from (Howard), guys who could fall off (Byrd, Utley), and seemingly tries to find a silver lining somewhere:

I’m just the messenger: With Ruiz, Howard, Byrd, Utley and Jimmy Rollins, the Phillies are counting on five regulars in their age-34 seasons or older. Only four teams have had five position players that old bat 400-plus times in a season — the 1945 White Sox, 1985 Angels and 2002 and 2007 Giants. Hey, it worked for the 2002 Giants, who went to the World Series. But these Phillies don’t haveBarry Bonds in the middle of the lineup.

The final word: I can see a scenario where the Phillies could win 85-87 games and sneak into the wild-card picture, but a lot has to go right for that to happen.

Ruben Amaro Jr. expects everything to go just right.

I get what you’re saying, the written words of journalists shouldn’t weigh too much on our emotional investment but @will, that team and this team on paper are nothing alike.

2nd to last is down right a low blow but hopefully the locker room sees this kind of stuff and has a flame to their balls and a sense of urgency all year long.

Play D, hit balls, take walks, nail some guys, kick start some good old rivalries and DON’T GIVE A F*CK!

Feels like that’s the mindset they need.

Yeah I wont act like the Phils are great. We dog ‘em too. But we’re the only ones allowed to make fun of them damn it.

I don’t care what you think about this year’s Phils team, Schoenfield is the biggest blow hard that ESPN employs to write about baseball.

Uh, no. I’m familiar with Dave from past articles he’s written and Enrico’s post above clearly states it was Dave that penned this most recent commentary.

Come on man. If you’re going to take shots at me and be a d*ck, at least think about it before you post it.

They are, without a doubt, a 90 loss team, but it may be stretch to say they are bottom 2. It’s pretty hard to lose 100, they would have to be horrendous, and they are just moderately bad. I hope they lose 100 though, because I don’t think they’ll blow out Amaro unless the season is a complete disaster.

I’ve been a Phillies fan since 1963 and I haven’t been this concerned in a LONG time. Second worse team? Maybe not but definitely bottom five. When does training camp start?

I find it hard to believe that there isn’t at least one other team who “if everything goes right” still wouldn’t make the playoffs, hence calling them the 2nd worst team in baseball is a little over the top. However, the fact that we’re even in the discussion speaks to just how historically bad our GM is.

And anyone who calls the season Cole Hamels had “terrific” needs to have his head examined.

I LOVE TO READ DISALLUSIIONED FANS (THE 3 MILLION FROM LAST YEAR’S ATTENDANCE) AND FUTURE 3 MILLION SUPPORTERS THIS YEAR, GULP AND WONDER.
      THE OWNERS NEED YOU TO SUPPORT THEM;
ALL THEY GOT FROM COMCAST WAS MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.
AND THEY ADDED TO THE TEAM: ENOUGH TO GET THEM NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE LEAGUE, AND YOUR SUPPORT.
KEEP UP YOUR SPIRITS WHEN THE PITCHERS PITCH A SHUTOUT. AND YOUR TEAM LOSES BY ONLY ONE RUN……AGAIN, AND AGAIN….AND AGAIN.
IVE BEEN WATCHING SINCE 1934, AND IT’S ALL ABOUT THE OWNERS…FORGET AMARO..HE DOES WHAT THEY TELL HIM TO DO. AND IT IS THEIR MONEY THAT COUNTS, AND YOUR ATTENDANCE 3 MILLION IS THEIR GOAL, NOT A WORLD SERIES.

Phils will be “Fightin’ ” with the Marlins for last in the NL Least. They can join the Sixers, Flyers, and who knows about the Eagles? on the forever road to Phutility that is Philly pro sports.
