Freddy Galvis Suspended 50 Games for PEDs

We won't be seeing Freddy Galvis for awhile. The rookie infielder was placed on the 15-day disabled list two weeks ago, and was presumed unavailable for far longer. Now it's official.

Major League Baseball sentenced the 22-year-old rookie to a 50-game ban for testing positive for a performance enhancing drug. The "silver lining," if you can call it that, is Galvis might miss that and more anyway due to a lower-back injury, so he'll serve out the suspension while sitting on the DL.

For his part, Galvis is denying any intentional wrongdoing, but acknowledging that won't have any impact either way on the discipline he now faces:

“A trace amount of a banned substance – 80 parts in a trillion – was
detected in my urine sample," Galvis said in a statement released by the
team. "I am extremely disappointed in what has transpired. I cannot
understand how even this tiny particle of a banned substance got into my
body. I have not and never would knowingly use anything illegal to
enhance my performance. I have always tried to follow the team’s
strength and conditioning methods, listen to the trainers, work out hard
and eat right. Unfortunately, the rules are the rules and I will be
suspended.

Whatever the case, it's a shame. One of the few feel-good stories this year winds up with a fractured back, and now a sullied reputation it would appear.
