Hamels On The Mound as Phils Look to Avoid Sweep

Apr 15, 2012, 12:20 PM EDT

Cole Hamels takes the mound at Citizens Bank Park as the Phillies face Mike Pelfrey and the New York Mets. Game starts at 1:35PM

Cole Hamels, searching for his first win of the young season, will look to play the role of stopper today as the Phillies try to avert being swept at home by the Mets. Hamels will be opposed by Mike Pelfrey. In 19 career games against the Phils Pelfrey is 7-7 with a 5.37 ERA. Phillies hitters have posted a .302/.359/.453 slash line against the big righty.

Charlie Manuel can only hope that his offense continues that run of success against Pelfrey, as the bats have been pretty much silenced in the first two game of the series. The Phils scored just two runs off of R.A. Dickey and Jon Niese over the first two games. Psychologically, it’d be nice to salvage a game against the Mets before heading out West on a 10-game road trip.

1. Juan Pierre (LF)
2. Shane Victorino (CF)
3. Jimmy Rollins (SS)
4. Hunter Pence (RF)
5. Ty Wigginton (3B)
6. Laynce Nix (1B)
7. Carlos Ruiz (C)
8. Pete Orr (2B)
9. Cole Hamels (P)
Yes, you read that correctly. One-third of the lineup consists of Ty Wigginton, Laynce Nix and Pete Orr. Fortunately, Cole Hamels is not accustomed to a ton of run support. One Met Hamels will not have to face today is Jason Bay, who is out of the lineup with a jammed finger (David Wright and his broken pinkie laughs at Bay’s jammed finger).
Gametime is 1:35.
