Keith Olbermann is pissed at the Phillies over Wheels and Sarge move

Jan 9, 2014, 1:23 PM EDT

If you caught Keith Olbermann’s show on ESPN2 on Wednesday night then you saw him select the Philadelphia Phillies as the “winner” of his segment known as the “World’s Worst in Sports.” It’s kind of his new play on his old MSNBC bit “Worst Person in the World” where he’d single out some nitwit.

He picked the Phils last night for parting ways with Chris Wheeler and Gary Matthews yesterday to make way for a new face, rumors of which include Ricky Bottalico, Brad Lidge, or Chris Coste.

This move greatly upset Olbermann.

You’ve got to fast forward about halfway through the clip to get to the Phils bit.

Keith Olbermann was a jerk on MSNBC, so I discard any of his comments. Firstly, the Phillies didn’t fire anybody. Comcast did that. The Phillies have offered jobs in the front office to both. The Sarge was nothing special as a color man; Wheels , I liked, but a substantial number of fans did not. Thus Olbermann doesn’t know about what he is talking.

I don’t like the firings of Wheels and Sarge. I respect Wheeler for his drive in learning inside baseball by picking the brains of players, front office personnel throughout his career. Matthews may not be the most polished speaker but he knows the game. I’ll miss both of them. I hope the replacement is not Ricky B. He just comes across as a sarcastic ex-jock. If he’s the color guy I’m going to have to turn the sound on the TV down and listen to Fransky and LA.

You don’t already listen to Fransky and LA? Even if its on a delay its always been better then the TV hacks. And didn’t you think it was hella annoying to listen to wheels whine all summer about them losing? and I am so glad I don’t have to listen to Sarge say. “Hes gotta put good wood on the ball,” one more time.

Actually, McCarthy is the more annoying of the tv announcers. I though they made a mistake by not rotating Anderson and Sarge from time to time. Sarge got much better over the years and was more entertaining and more knowledgeable than either Wheeler or McCarthy. I hope they reverse the decision on him being in broadcasting. Franske and Anderson have their own niche.

Nobody liked Wheels as much as Oberman must have. Not even Harry cared about him. At least Sarge was getting better and more likable. Nobody boycotting over this move.

Keith who? Wheeler was a blowhard. always was! Harry Kalas didnt like him for a reason, he’s a little snake! Sarge wasn’t very good plain and simple. No great loss

Keith obviously does not watch many Phills games or he’d be happy that the Phils got rid of wheels & sarge , watching the Phillies game was brutal listening to those two , sarge was a good player and wheels was a great fan. Keith shouldn’t even have a show I know of no one who watches or listens to him in Philly , he should talk and comment about things he knows . I think he’s like must sport casters and talks to hear himself . since Harry K past away the games where hard to listen to . I for one hope they hire a great baseball guy with some kind of personality and a voice that demands you to listen to as Harry k did. Phillie sport fans are extremely knowledgeable of their teams and we need sport announcers like Harry K , mark Jackson , Murrell Reese sorry to say it about wheels but he is like Keith , talks a lot but says nothing of value or importance to the game or sporting news .

I disagree with you comments on Chris not saying anything worthwhile. He knows more about baseball then most people. Some say he talked too much, I would rather hear him talk then dead silence. If anyone talked to much it was Gary and it wasn’t about the game.

The only thing that Chris Wheeler knew or knows about baseball is that he couldn’t play it. Good riddence.

Guess what Keith, Rich Asburn nor Harry Kalas liked Chris Wheeler very much. That is fairly well known in Philadelphia area for those who follow the Phillies.

Wheeler was so overdue to leave the broadcast booth – he was simply insufferable. He talked way too much (can’t overstate this) and always was trying to impress the viewer/listener with his baseball knowledge. He was horrible and his little boy laugh was just creepy.

Sarge, well, he was OK. Nothing more nothing less. OK.

I’m not clear who actually pays the Phills’ announcers, but if it will be Comcast, then it is most welcome to have an announcer with the ability to be constructively critical of the team when necessary. Wheeler would NEVER criticize a player however much it may have deserved and Ruben Amaro was treated with such kid gloves, it was comical.

Speaking of Ruben Amaro, someone please share with me his positive results. He has produced little leading to wins on the field. He should have been let go after 2013 season. Simple really. It’s all about results and RA does not PRODUCE. Bye bye RA because the only thing keith O got right is that the Phils in 2014 will not be very good.

    Replacement Suggestion…Todd Kalas !

His talent is being wasted with Tampa Bay. Let’s get a Kalas back in the booth !

As far as Olbermann…he’s a full blown hack !

If it wasn’t for Dan Patrick carrying him years ago on ESPN, nobody would know who he is !

Sarge was passable. Olberman should be forced to listen to Wheeler 162 times a year and then comment.

I did not like Wheeler when he started and over the years I came to like him less and less. Sarge was superfluous. The Phillies can do a lot better. Let’s see whether they do. Someone needs to make McCarthy look good. He does not seem to be able to determine the difference between a fly out and a home run. The guys has poor instincts and needs help.

Let’s face it. I don’t know about other Phillies fans, but I don’t think any broadcast team will ever live up to Ashburn and Kalas. They were just the best ever. I’ve read those smarmy stories about Wheeler, so I don’t really care about him. Sarge? I feel bad about saying this, but I really disliked listening to him.

Compared to Ashburn and Kalas, I’m not even that crazy about McCarthy, Franzen or Larry Anderson. I know that’s rough, and unfair, because Ashburn and Kalas were some kind of unusual magic that only comes around once in a lifetime. Man, I miss them.

Wheeler made the game unwatchable for me. I have not made it through an entire Phils game for years. The game is meant to be observed and enjoyed, not jammed down your throat. Some of the best memories of my youth were riding home at dusk with my dad in our old beat up station wagon after ball practice or after working at my uncles farm, listening to the game on crackling AM radio. Sometimes Harry and Whitey would go half an inning without much other than Harry calling the balls and strikes. Just me, my dad, the night air, and the sounds of baseball. It was like you were among friends rather than getting schooled by a condescending teacher. I’m sure wheeler is a good person. Maybe I’m just getting old…….

the next thing the owners of the Phillies should do is SELL TO COMCAST. THEN AND ONLY THEN WILL SOMEONE IN THE ORGANIZATION WANT A WINNER INSTEAD OF A MONEY MAKER.
THE OWNERS ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN THE 3 MILLION FAN BASE: NOTE….HOWARD, UTLEY,COOCH, ROLLINS…..PEOPLE OF YESTERYEAR WHO ARE FINISHED……..NOT THE HITTERS THEY NEED TO PLAY.

I refuse to have a tv in my home on when be is on the scrscreen, the guy is an idiot. As foe wheels and sarge sarge was a player, knows the game and has good insights, wwheels was.fun to make fun of. I heard they have a couple ex pitchers who might take a spot, pitchers are not baseball players, i woukd rather a player. Doesnt really matter i dont watch for he.color guys i watch the phils whatever channel they are on.
