The guy many Phillies fans at one point hoped could be a closer of the future, Scott Mathieson, was released from the team this afternoon as he'll go on to pursue a career in Asia. Lots of choices there. Perhaps the Yomiuri Giants, according to Jim Salisbury. [CSN]

While the team cut ties with Mathieson, they secured a pair of names to minor-league deals. Former Mets left-hander Pat Misch will join the organization while infielder Kevin Frandsen has re-signed. Misch spent most of last season in Triple A. [Jayson Stark]

Shortstop Freddy Galvis wasn't exactly ripping the cover off the ball down in Venezuela and will pack in his winter ball schedule on December 15th as he looks to get his body in shape leading up to one of the more important spring trainings of his career. [CSN]

The Mariners and Nationals appear interested in slugger Prince Fielder. Wouldn't like to see him join the NL East. [MLB Trade Rumors]
