The Phillies today offered salary arbitration to shortstop Jimmy Rollins and reliever Ryan Madson as was expected. What wasn't as expected was the move to also offer salary arbitration to left fielder Raul Ibanez, although there had been some inklings recently that the Phillies had some interest in bringing him back for another season.

The Phillies today offered salary arbitration to shortstop Jimmy Rollins and reliever Ryan Madson as was expected. What was a bit surprising was the decision to also offer salary arbitration to left fielder Raul Ibanez, although there had been some inklings recently that the Phillies had some interest in bringing him back for another season.

Ibanez has seen better days as an everyday player in the outfield, but if used probably as platoon-slash-bat-off-the-bench Rauuuuuul could hear those calls from the fans at Citizens Bank Park a few more times before his career is up. His situation and the Phillies remaining moves will certainly be interesting to watch. Although the Daily News’ David Murphy guesses that it’s a move done solely for the compensation, “Gotta think Ibanez has already told them he will decline. Makes no obvious sense otherwise.”
