Phillies to Give Away One Million Bobble Heads June 4… Wait, That Can’t Be Right

May 31, 2013, 5:35 PM EDT

Okay, so the Phillies aren’t giving Carlos Ruiz bobble heads to the first one million fans in attendance at Tuesday’s game against the Marlins. However, they will be giving away the one millionth bobble head since the team began the promotion in 2001, a milestone the franchise will proudly celebrate over the next week.

Starting today until June 5, all 27 bobble heads in the line will be on display at the Phillies Authentic Shop (behind Section 133), including the storied 2004 collection of Randy Wolf and Mike Lieberthal, per A team press release. And if you happen to be attending the June 4 ballgame that features the second Chooch giveaway, one random fan could wind up with lucky No. 1,000,000.

The prize: among other things, a gold-painted Ruiz bobble head autographed by the catcher himself. Want.

The Phillies included a list of all the figures they’ve given away since the promotions began, which we’ve included below. There have been some bumps in the road, such as the Hunter Pence giveaway after he was traded from the team, or the infamous Roy Halladay where his glove was on the wrong hand. And of course, the dirty little secret with these things is they never look like the person they are supposed to. They are general fun items though that are usually a big draw for Citizens Bank Park.

I didn’t realize Pat Burrell was the first Phillies bobblehead giveaway. I was in 5th grade and went to that game with my best friend and his family. The Phillies played the Cardinals that day and it was Albert Pujols’ rookie season. Pujols got a hit or two that afternoon and I remember even Phillies fans around us were talking about the guy. There was a level of excitement about him among everyone. Then we booed the crap out of J.D. Drew. If I remember right, it was a close game that the Phillies blew in the late innings. Those were the days! Oh yeah the bobblehead… Yeah I’ve had that thing sitting on my dresser ever since that game.

My dad got the Roy Oswalt one…except Roy’s arm fell off while it was still in the box! After that was when the real Roy starting having back problems…coincidence?

I’d like to see the stats on this but after the Burrell bobble head give-away didn’t his numbers drop significantly.

The bobble head curse infected Howard also?

    Dear Phillies front office:
If you’re labeling a game as “premium” just for the giveaway, and you’re charging more for the ticket than the same matchup the night before and the night after…then you’re not “giving away” the bobblehead, clowns. Clowns.

you know the season is over when you get more positive posts on bobbleheads than on the “Fightins”. Gee, was that Michael Martinez who made the final out? Maybe there should be a bobblehead of him to remind us just how shakey this team is!

    • BenE. - Jun 1, 2013 at 7:52 PM

Yep, that was Martinez. The only Phillie who is a more automatic out with the game on the line than Ryan Howard. Look, Howard pretty much sucks, but our clean up hitter was inexplicably lifted to put in a guy who bats what, .180 in his career?
