Quotable: Ruben Amaro on John Mayberry Jr.

Dec 3, 2013, 12:31 PM EDT

“Didn’t think about it all,” the Phillies’ GM said when asked if he considered non-tendering Mayberry. “He was not a non-tender candidate for us. Any player who can hit 14 home runs in this day and age off the bench in limited at-bats and have the versatility he does … there was no thought to non-tendering him.”

For more check out Jim Salisbury’s full story. Loved those quotes though.

“He’s a lot more valuable than I guess people think,” Amaro said. “Part of the equation is whether he’s viewed as an everyday player or not. Well, I don’t believe he’s an everyday player. I see him as fill-in-in-a-pinch guy. He’s got versatility. He can play first base and all three outfield positions. That versatility and the fact that he’s got some power are all things in our estimation that are pluses. He can be a role player on a team that can win.

“And it’s not like he’s an expensive player in this day and age. There is value in a guy who makes $1.5 million or something in that range.”

JMJ’s only value is getting things down from a shelf that’s too high for the rest of us to reach.

Lee and Crybaby Hamels will dominate and the rest will take care of itself. Another 4th place finish he needs to go.

How does this comment involve that waste of space Mayberry? Your use of the the run-on sentence is astounding. You have some clever nicknames too. They really steered my attention away from your argument…or lack there of. I mean, “King Kong Nose Howard”, now THAT’S original. You might be the first person in history to compare a black man to an ape. Congratulations you racist, uninformed, “fan since ’08″, personalized jersey wearing, piece of refuse!…With that being said, FIRE RAJ.

“Didn’t Think About It At All: The Ruben Amaro Jr. Story” available now only from your local bookstore cuz he’s an old school guy, why would it be available online?

This might be the best comment ever on this site.

RAJ shouldn’t be answering questions about singing a 5th outfielder for a mil and a half. He should be answering questions about the other ancients he has on the team, how he overpays them and his plan moving forward. Like oh by the way, what about your shitty bullpen

I have now begun scrawling tick marks on my wall, counting the days until Ruben is fired. I might need a bigger wall, given how limp and flaccid this ownership group is. It might take them another 10 years to realize how much he sucks.

All this says to me is that sometime in the future, say 15 years or so, John Mayberry Jr. will be in the organization as a hitting coach or such. Get used to him folks.
