Report: Phillies Gauging Trade Interest In Cole Hamels

As if their play on the field as of late wasn't depressing enough, the Phillies are now reportedly making calls to gauge interest in Cole Hamels. That's according to the below tweet by CBS' Jon Heyman.

After trading Jim Thome on Saturday, Ruben Amaro Jr. indicated that decision would not be the first of a fire sale, but rumblings of Hamels being shopped today make you wonder.

Many believe the numbers Hamels could receive on the open market to be astronomical, with Ken Rosenthal previously reporting a potential 6-year, $150 million or 7-year, $175 million contract in Cole's future. Rosenthal also said the Phillies likely wouldn't come near those numbers.

If that is the case, and Hamels is more concerned with leaving no money on the table than returning to Philadelphia, shopping him seems like the smart move at this stage of the game. We all would obviously love Cole Hamels back with the Phillies, but if it's not going to work, this is an option beyond settling for compensatory draft picks when he walks. Ruben Amaro Jr. has to have a good sense of the situation by now.
