Some Philadelphia Residents Assumed the Phillies Fireworks Were Racists Celebrating Zimmerman Verdict

Jul 15, 2013, 11:00 AM EDT

The Phillies typically awesome fireworks display at Citizens Bank Park hit a couple of snags over the weekend. It was pushed from Friday to Saturday due to inclement weather. Then the two Saturday games with the Chicago White Sox both going to extra innings pushed the festivities into the wee hours of Sunday morning. Add to that the timing of the verdict of the George Zimmerman / Trayvon Martin trial and you have quite a bit of sleepy confusion.

Some people of Philadelphia went right for the awful and rather odd assumptions, per the Daily News:

Meanwhile, aghast newsies from Philadelphia and beyond who heard fireworks – those in South Philly and elsewhere – assumed they were sent into the skies by racists celebrating the Saturday-night verdict in Florida’s George Zimmerman case.
“People were afraid a guilty verdict would have resulted in riots. Thank god #Zimmerman’s verdict only resulted in white pride fireworks,” tweeted Sana Saeed, a senior editor at Islawmix, a project of Harvard Law’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society.

The Phillies do not play again until Friday.

I can see the confusion. Who doesn’t have two hundred grand worth of professional mortars sitting in the basement of their row home?

Because “Hispanic” is not a race and “Middle Eastern” is a subset of “White”:

okay ill be sure to call my Saudi Arabian friends white next time I see them.

      • duffman - Jul 15, 2013 at 1:04 PM

In your link, “Hispanic” was included in “Some other race” category. soooo it is a race.

      • The Commercial Critic - Jul 15, 2013 at 1:12 PM

How the hell did this get 5 thumbs down?

Yasiel Puig is Hispanic and black
Raul Ibanez is Hispanic and white

Hispanic does not necessarily not equal white. His father is a white guy of German descent, hence the name Zimmerman.

So the KKK’s clothing was derived from traditional Arab dress, didn’t know that.

Why are Caucasians the only race that is racist ?
If it was a Caucasian who tweeted what Saeed did, they would surely have made the national news and been fired for their “indiscretion” … waiting to see the apology, but not holding my breath as she probably thinks she is above racism, which only solidify’s her status as a BIG one !

People celebrating Zimmerman’s acquittal are tagged “racists” by the corrupt liberal media. It’s so sad how misinformed and pathetic the citizens of this country are. If my son was a neighborhood watchmen and a 6’3 guy attacked him and punched him hard enough to break his nose and slammed his head on the concrete, I would pray to God he had a gun to defend himself. Trayvon’s parents weren’t there for him when he was growing up, and he couldn’t even go to the store to buy a drink and candy without getting into a vicious fight and getting himself killed.

George Zimmerman is a registered democrat and voted for Obama. Obama shipped George Zimmerman down the river, but luckily there is this thing called a justice system in America (which the corrupt prosecutors in this case tried to exploit, what these prosecutors can get away with is shameful) which is ABOVE Obama and his brainwashed sheep of liberal drones. Eric Holder is a disgraceful criminal as well. The real bad people in this case are people like you, who call people vicious and hateful things like racists.

      • dmc - Jul 15, 2013 at 6:08 PM

I never called anyone vicious or racist. Also, I’m not sure what this has to do with Zimmerman being a democrat or voting for Obama. It seems to me like you’re rambling incoherently trying to make a point. Zimmerman killed an unarmed man. Someone he was told not to approach. Someone who had every right to be where he was. This has nothing to do with Trayvon’s parents. It’s ridiculous for you to even bring that up and jump to that conclusion. Zimmerman should not have gotten off like he did. I don’t necessarily think one should be tagged as racist for celebrating Zimmerman’s acquittal. You probably should be tagged as a shitty person though.

“Someone who had every right to be where he was.” – Trayvon Martin had no right to be where he was, on top of George Zimmerman while George was squealing for help like a little girl. He had no right to attack George Zimmerman, punch him hard enough to break his nose, then get on top of him in a ground and pound position, slamming his head into concrete and reigning blows upon him. George Zimmerman screamed like a little girl for 45 seconds before he did what he had to to defend himself, which was BACKED UP BY EVIDENCE (not that braindeads like you care about evidence). I’d like to see what you would do if a stranger is straddling your son, beating him to pulp, you wouldn’t want him to have a weapon? Trayvon also referenced ground and pound in text messages which were withheld by a liberal judge (we won’t even get into what else was on Trayvon’s phone). The liberal prosecution also tried to withhold evidence until the 11th hour, and the IT guy who exposed this fraud was fired. Luckily the prosecutor couldn’t lie and cheat their way to a victory, thank God for Mark O’Mara and Don West. You know absolutely nothing about this case (or about anything else), and the juror and Rachel Jeantel on CNN last night has only proved me right.

So it is racist if people were to celebrate a man being found “Not Guilty” by our justice system? I’d say the overwhelming majority of Caucasians harbor no racists feelings towards other races. It is historically oppressed peoples that continue to claim racism, that keep racism in existence. I condemn what generations before me did, I am not racist, so stop throwing in our faces. Zimmerman couldn’t be proven guilty sorry.

There is nothing to celebrate in this case. A young man of 17 was killed – for no reason at all. Unfortunately, the laws in Florida allow this to happen. I pray “Stand Your Ground” does not immediately become law all over this great country.

Wrong, there was a very good reason Trayvon Martin died that night. Because he beat up another stranger so badly that said stranger thought the only way he could save himself was to use his weapon. If a person jumps you then punches you in the nose so hard that it breaks, then knocks you to the ground and is on top of you grounding and pounding on concrete, and you are screaming like a little girl for help for a long time (listen to the 911 call, Zimmerman is BEGGING for help, and listen to the witnesses), then you have a right to defend yourself. People like you no who know nothing about the facts of the case are DESTROYING our country from the inside out.

Honestly both Martin and Zimmerman were in the wrong that night (Martin for attacking Zimmerman and Zimmerman for following Martin and not identifying himself as neighborhood watch) and it resulted in an unfortunate death.

      • dmc - Jul 15, 2013 at 6:10 PM

Seriously, who is giving this asshole all these “thumbs up?”

    • psudrozz - Jul 16, 2013 at 8:42 AM

yeah Z should have just let Martin continually pound his head into the concrete.

Why are people happy about the verdict? Unless you are related to or friendly with Zimmerman, what other reason would you be happy about a not guilty verdict in a Florida murder investigation?

Your question is a cop-out. It doesn’t matter whether or not anyone is happy. You are avoiding my question: why are people calling those who ARE happy, racist? Such spiteful rhetoric only seeks to divide a country where race relations are better than they’ve ever been. Only a small portion of the population considers race a major issue in the United States now. I’m willing to bet my life that the overwhelming majority of those who are happy feel that way because the laws in the book were justly upheld, not because someone got away with killing a black guy.

      • Brett Morgen - Jul 16, 2013 at 3:12 PM

We are happy with the verdict because a man has a right to defend himself, and not have his freedom and life taken away as a result of doing so. I know you don’t care about a man’s freedom, but I do. The corrupt liberal media tried to take away an innocent man’s freedom, and Mark O’Mara, Don West, and George Zimmerman had to fight with EVERYTHING they had against Barack Obama and his uneducated army of America hating liberals (not to mention former Black Panther Eric Holder). This is to be celebrated, the government does NOT have unlimited power to take away our freedom, and we as citizens have a right to defend ourselves against people who would viciously assault strangers, strangers who don’t back off when someone is lying on the ground, screaming like a little girl for help for 45 seconds.

Because they lied early in the process (see: George Zimmerman’s ongoing lawsuit vs. NBC news), and now they have to continue the false narrative (even with pie all over their face), this is the where the term “white hispanic” came from.

If only we could Move On from Obamacare… the system who’s success depends on 18-34 olds with no health insurance to buy massively overpriced government health insurance to fund it (check out the monthly rates and premiums in California, I mean WOW). What a monumental disaster, stupidity will DESTROY this country from the inside out, stupidity from Barack and Michelle Obama, and stupidity from his massive army of braindead liberal sheep followers.

I’d love to hear your number 1 gripe with Obamas presidency. If your answer is health care, tell me how it has negatively affected you. Lets hear your biggest gripe. Backed with facts. Go ahead, killer.
