Bryan Curtis writes a story today for Grantland about a pack of old timer New York sportswriters known as "the Chipmunks" that included Larry Merchant, Stan Isaacs, Steve Jacobson, George Vecsey, Phil Pepe, Leonard Shecter and a few others.
But hidden in one of the footnotes is a list of out-of-town Chipmunks that included Philadelphia's own Stan Hochman.
Why are we pointing this out? Mostly because as someone who dabbles in covering sports teams at the ball park/arena from time to time, tales of How Things Used to Be fascinate me. It's just a totally different world now than it was back then.

And also because this is just awesome:
Rebellion no. 2: a Yankees game in Kansas City. [Stan] Isaacs learns that owner Charlie O. Finley has installed a sheep meadow beyond the right-field wall. Isaacs takes his typewriter, leaves the press box, and reports from the meadow for the entire game.
The article is fascinating if you have a remote interest in how sports writing used to be.
