Sully Says: Phillies Have Likely at Least Inquired on Giancarlo Stanton

Ruben Amaro Jr. and the Philadelphia Phillies have been doing their due diligence all fall and have been getting their coal in a line ready to throw it on the oncoming free-agency fire. The hot stove is about to heat up.

In an article posted on Friday, CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury spoke with the Phillies GM who believes things will start to really get going now that the last piece of Thanksgiving pie has been eaten.

The article nicely summarizes what we've learned of the Phillies plans thus far, needing to address center field as well as third base and maybe a potential eighth inning arm. But Sully also touches on the wet dream of many Phillies fans as well: the prospect of adding the likes of Marlins' slugger Giancarlo Stanton after Miami's big fire sale earlier this month. Salisbury writes:

Amaro would be in violation of MLB tampering rules if he discussed any
pursuit of Stanton, but he was asked nonetheless if Miami’s fire sale
tempted him to pick up the phone and inquire about the type of
right-handed power bat that the Phillies have long craved. Amaro smiled
sheepishly at the question.

“We’ve made some inquiries about a
lot of players that went in that trade, both to Toronto and to Miami,”
he said. “But nothing imminent so far.”

Sheepish smiles are the best.

Anyway, it's one of those things that's fun to at least think about.

And you all know how Ruben Amaro Jr. likes to shock people...
