The Phillies Got Swept by the Nats and Charlie Called It the Toughest Stretch of His Career

Aug 12, 2013, 10:50 AM EDT

The Phillies lost to the Washington Nationals on Friday. Then they lost again on Saturday. And once more on Sunday.

The Wheels are long gone. They fell off weeks ago.

Charlie Manuel talked about it all following yesterday’s game and called it the toughest stretch of his managerial career.

“I don’t know whatcha gonna do about,” he added.

There’s no sugarcoating it. This team is BAD and the future isn’t bright.

Stupid mistakes on the field, ineptitude at the plate, mediocre pitching (at best), bad calls from the coaching staff and delusion in the front office for thinking the current crop of guys can compete. This current team is like watching the Phillies of the late ’80′s and mid-90′s to mid-’00s.

The window has officially closed on those playoff years.

It’s it true the closer to the bottom of the division they are the higher draft picks they get?

I can’t imagine our scouting staff doing anything productive with a high pick at this rate.

I’ll say it again: it sure is a tough season for an optimist.

They only have to fix the defense (at pretty much every position), the offense (at 5 or 6 positions in the order), the bullpen, and the bench. I’m sure old school RAJ will use the incredible scouting department and his ever trusty gut to fill these holes and of course, Utley, Howard and Rollins will be 2009 good. See, simple as that.

Charlie has always made the silly substitutions and bullpen moves that seem even worse now, but Ruben has given Charlie nothing to work with. For several years we’ve lacked:

    - top of the order guys who can get on base
    - a willingness to spend beyond some false internal budget that is short of the luxury tax level
    - trade deadline aptitude
    - a functional bullpen

    Thanks again Ruben
