Nerlens Noel On GM Who Traded for Him: ‘He’s Just a Genius’

Jul 23, 2013, 3:10 PM EDT

The Philadelphia 76ers finally introduced their big prize of the Jrue Holiday trade this afternoon at PCOM as No. 6 overall draft pick Nerlens Noel met with the local media for the first time.

One of the topics Noel touched on was his new GM, Sam Hinkie, and how he managed to pull off such a smooth move in reuniting him with his former AAU teammate and “best friend” Michael Carter-Williams.

Nerlens was obviously a big fan of the move and called the guy who signs his paychecks a “genius” for pairing the duo together again.

And if you ever wondered how a regular-sized person interviews a giant NBA player, here’s a little inside baseball:

Listening to Angelo and his pack of irrelevant morons discuss the Sixers cracks me up. I know that by merely mentioning his name “he is winning”, to an extent, but I can’t get over how desperate his grasp for continued pertinence has become. Nega-delphia personified.

Whenever I tune into the morning show ( when I want to start my morning off shaking my head in confusion ), I always walk away wondering who the hell the demo is for that show. It is a circus of idiots yammering without consequence.

Honestly, Philadelphia deserves better. A town as sports crazed as Philly should have a good, local sports talk morning show – I can’t figure out how these guys manage to stay on the air. I’d love to take a look at the ratings.

“when I want to start my morning off shaking my head in confusion”

Sadly, I think the demo is “people who can’t stand Mike & Mike”.

You cowardly liberals deleted some of my comments. But I’d expect that much from freedom hating socialists, silence the opposition. You disgust me, and your site is a massive failure, none of a liberal cowards ever sat in the 700 level. Your site will be shut down before I’m able to post again, but until you learn not to be liberal cowards, Philly will meet the same fate as Detriot.

    • Slade - Jul 23, 2013 at 4:43 PM

      LOL this guy.

    • nyphilsphan - Jul 23, 2013 at 4:48 PM

My family had season tix in the 700 level. Some of my earliest sports memories are sitting up there with my dad and my grandfather while they and all the friends my grandfather had made up there over the 30 or so years he had the seats booed/cheered the shit out of Michael Irvin as he was taken out of The Vet in a stretcher. Where were you at the time? Running a Klan meeting?

The only coward here is you. You wanna drop labels on everyone around you that doesn’t buy into all your BS. Stop whining! No one cares what you have to say around here. Do you BOTH deserve a forum to be heard AND deserve to have everyone on a sports blog agree with you? You do have a right to free speech but not a right to be agreed with, so if you’re in desperate need of both, head over to Reddit with the other crack-pots.

I’m no “liberal”, I’m just a “pragmatist”. It’s so funny how the people with the most right-wing conservative views are always the people with OBVIOUS anger issues. Don’t let the rhetoric get to you. They want you to be angry, and they know how easy it is. You’re the target demo: angry white men. You’re just playing into their little game!

      • Paul - Jul 23, 2013 at 6:30 PM

        “Pragmatist”. You stole my word!

      • nyphilsphan - Jul 23, 2013 at 6:55 PM

yes, that’s why I i put it in quotations.

      • Paul - Jul 23, 2013 at 7:15 PM

        I’ve been cited!

      • Brett Morgen - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:47 AM

“Where were you at the time? Running a Klan meeting?”
        - I don’t recall ever bringing race into anything I said? You say you’re not a liberal, then you call me a racist, how did this turn into a race argument? Oh yea that’s right you’re a liberal and will call anyone you can a racist, you say I’m the one who’s hateful, I would NEVER accuse anyone of being a racist, that is probably the most vile thing you can call someone, and you spit it out like it’s nothing

“You’re the target demo: angry white men.”
        - More liberal race baiting, thank you for proving my point, race hustling liberal

      • Brett Morgen - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:53 AM

George Zimmerman is also a “racist” according to you, right? I don’t know if I can help you, you’ve been so brainwashed by liberal media lies, I think it’s pretty much hopeless for you at this point.

      • willh888 - Jul 24, 2013 at 2:40 PM

Brett there’s a way to make a point without looking like a maniac. Sounds like you need a ZJ. Hit up AC this weekend and maybe you can switch back to sports chatter early next week.

      • nyphilsphan - Jul 25, 2013 at 5:51 AM

I made a joke about racism because your previous rant was racist: calling Obama “disgusting” for talking about the racial implications of the Zimmerman case evinces a complete blindness and lack of sensitivity toward the Civil Rights struggle that is still being fought.

A racist’s usual refuge in these modern times is to paint oneself as the victim. You keep using the language of victimization- “how could you use such hateful language? This is liberal race-baiting! Racial demagoguery!” Everything is an agenda or a conspiracy aimed right at you! I bet you can’t even walk down the streets anymore without people locking their cars or following you around in convenience stores. I bet you get racially profiled and stopped and frisked by the police every damn day for no good reason. Obama sure is keepin a Brett-man down. Keep fighting, brother. One day, you’ll be allowed to drink out of the same water fountains as the rest of us.

Or maybe you’ll realize that the ticket you got the other day had nothing to do with president Obama, take responsibility for yourself and realize that ll your “Arch-Conservative Hate-Baiting” (which is how you started the conversation today) is just a load of BS. You’re a total cliche- the Fox News Conservative that finds a way to blame EVERY problem in their lives on “liberals” (which, when I think you say it, it simply means “people who disagree with me”). I think you need some therapy or meds or something man. You’ve really lost it.

      • nyphilsphan - Jul 25, 2013 at 5:55 AM

Also, the assumption that I need YOUR help is laughable. This whole time, you’ve only been trying to help?

Let’s see how you started off today, not counting all the deleted posts from yesterday:

“You cowardly liberals deleted some of my comments. But I’d expect that much from freedom hating socialists, silence the opposition. You disgust me, and your site is a massive failure, none of a liberal cowards ever sat in the 700 level. Your site will be shut down before I’m able to post again, but until you learn not to be liberal cowards, Philly will meet the same fate as Detriot.”

Go on an think on what you just said and maybe reflect on whether or not a person on earth would read that post and think, “hey, this guy is making some good points!”.

    • Ray - Jul 23, 2013 at 9:02 PM

oh yea LIBERALS are the cowards..come on bro.

    • Lava - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:59 AM

      Did I miss something?

    • thesixersbench - Jul 24, 2013 at 2:37 PM

      Well, that escalated quickly.

      • red2gold - Jul 24, 2013 at 4:04 PM

Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident.

  4. nyphilsphan - Jul 23, 2013 at 4:37 PM

Excited about this kid’s future. He’s got some room to fill out that frame and be a dominant defender in this league. I don’t think Tyson Chandler is the proper comparison, which is something I keep hearing. That is probably the low end of what this kid can accomplish when he get’s 100% healed up.

He’s an absolute athletic freak, has the potential to develop a serious offensive game under the rim, and will be cleaning up the offensive glass and creating 2 and 3rd opportunities. My only concern with his small frame is is defense down low against big PFs. but that’s something he can improve, given his athleticism, if he puts on 20 pounds.

Sick of the negadelphia comments (Jeff Rutand 2.0! Bynum 2.0)! Anyone who says that stuff never watched him play last year. Guy took over games with his defense. And it wasn’t just because of the college competition he was up against- I’ve NEVER seen someone elevate and block shots like that. He basically just nabbed steals 9 feet in there air. That’s why he was projected #1- he has the potential to develop into one of the best defensive players of all time. Not only that, the kid drew a TON of charges and that’s a great sign for his ability to understand his role on the team and basketball IQ. He’s a turnover machine, like most sports, turnover differential is a HUGELY important stat. Not only that, we got another kid, MCW, who was the most prolific swiper coming out of college this year.

Both players are works in progress on the offensive side of the ball, but to have 2 of your top players constantly taking away shots and possessions is a formula for victory- and NOT JUST REGULAR SEASON victory- Playoff Series are won and lost with tight defensive play and turnovers change the tides more so than in the regular season. Good thinking Sam. If it doesn’t work out, at least the team is being run by a guy with a vision for the future who understands the game!

I’ll take that potential and a lottery pick over another season stuck in the middle with Jrue. Hard to see him go but rather take the chance on Noel and MCW panning out and next year’s loaded draft.

GO SIXERS! It’s an exciting time to be a fan of this team. We got a man with a plan, baby!

Brett, you’re getting a little trolly. Can we keep the comments somewhat on track with what the posts are about?

  6. nyphilsphan - Jul 25, 2013 at 5:34 AM
