Report: Sixers could finally break ground on a new practice facility this summer

It's been roughly 10 months since the Sixers first proposed building a new practice facility at the Navy Yard in South Philly, and according to a report from the Delco Times' Chris Vito, construction could actually begin this summer, which sounds like a relief for head coach Brett Brown:

"I believe we're the last team in the NBA to have our own facility," he said.

The franchise has already moved its administrative offices to the Navy Yard, taking over space that used to belong to Tastykake.

An initial report from the Philadelphia Business Journal last June stated the Sixers were "seeking designs for a 55,000-square-foot facility that would be built on a vacant lot that occupies 3.3 acres."

The team is looking for a facility that would include “two basketball courts; fitness, training and rehabilitation space; player and coaching staff locker rooms; an audio-video review room; broadcast media facilities; a player lounge; food service; laundry; and 60 surface parking spaces.”

The Sixers have been practicing at PCOM since 2000 and were just a little further down City Line Ave. -- at Saint Joseph's, where somebody stole Moses Malone's dry cleaning -- before that.

"PCOM have been extremely hospitable in every way they can," Sixers coach Brett Brown said. "The fact is, we're a tenant."

When asked for comment, Allen Iverson said he'd be fine with the move so long as they built the whole thing inside of a retrofitted ship along with a T.G.I. Friday's.*
