Sixers Sign Kwame Brown to Be Their Center

According to Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Sixers have signed Kwame Brown to be their center on a two-year deal worth a total of about $6 million. (UPDATE: CSNPhilly.com's John Finger actually says it's a one-year deal, with an option for a second.)

Early-career promise and draft-bust status aside, Kwame's pretty much
exactly what you'd look for in a backup center—solid defensive guy, can
buy you some minutes, rebound decently and score on putbacks and stuff.
You'd pay $6 mil over two years for that pretty gladly, generally. The
problem is that the Sixers don't have a starting center in front of
Kwame—they have another backup-caliber guy in Spencer Hawes, whose skill
set is basically diametrically opposed to Kwame's. Spence can't defend
or bang in the interior, but he can do things like hit jumpers, make
interior passes, play the two-man game with a guard or wing—none of
which Kwame can do.

Put their skills together and you have just about an ideal center,
but play them individually and you're always gonna be exposed on one
end. The Kwame/Spence combo can give the Sixers a little flexibility
depending on matchups, which is nice, but it's far from a long-term
solution at the pivot. Still, the two-year deal—which is also the length
of Spence's contract, as well as just about everyone else they've
signed this off-season—doesn't lock the Sixers into any huge financial
commitment, so once again, low risk, low reward. Certainly seems like
the name of the game for the Ballers this summer.
