Prior to tonight’s game in Pittsburgh, Wayne Simmonds talked about the rivalry games with the Pens being the types of contests he loves to play in. He showed it in the first two periods by going out and scoring a goal, dropping gloves with Tanner Glass, and later assisting on the go-ahead goal to complete…

“It’s more intense than anything I had in the Western Conference,” Wayne Simmonds told the Inquirer. “Anaheim was our biggest rivalry when I played with L.A. But last year, when I stepped on the ice, it felt like both teams wanted to take each others’ heads off. It definitely makes for exciting hockey for the…

Before training camp got underway, before the lockout even started, when we were penciling in names for who might replace Jaromir Jagr on the Flyers’ top line, Jakub Voracek seemed a favorite. It’s been a long time coming, but when Voracek was paired with captain Claude Giroux on Monday, the two of them showcased why…

It wasn’t quite his opening shift in Game 6 of last season’s quarterfinals, but Claude Giroux knows how to make an entrance. Two days after ripping his teammates for “going through the motions,” Giroux threw his body around, corralled a slap-pass from Matt Read and beat goaltender Evgeni Nabokov just 26 seconds into the Flyers’…

We wanted to talk a little today about the increasingly dire situation the Flyers find themselves at the season’s one-third mark, coming off of a deflating collapse in New Jersey followed by a no-show effort in Montreal over the weekend. As it turns out though, the Orange & Black are right back in action this…

Thanks to their huge letdown on Friday, not only did the Flyers miss out on a quality opportunity to make up ground in the standings, but it puts added pressure on the club to come away with points in the second half of a back-to-back. That’s no simple task considering they’re on the road and…

You often have to wonder how the New Jersey Devils do it. Their goaltender is 40, and their best player departed during free agency, yet the 2012 Stanley Cup Finalists rarely show signs of slowing down. With 19 points and an 8-2-3 record, the Devils sit atop the Eastern Conference once again. It’s early, but…

Oh, man. If you didn’t already miss seeing Jaromir Jagr in orange and black this season, this amazing group of fans in Calgary last night will surely make you long for the days of the Jagr Salute in Philadelphia.

With today being Valentine’s day and with the growing trend of legendary Flyers goalies sharing their one-of-a-kind love advice, we have a special note for you lovers from none other than former Flyer great Ron Hextall.
Okay dorks, listen up. Let’s forget my career with the Philadelphia Flyers. The goals I scored, the clanging of pipes, giving Chris Chelios nitemares for the rest of his life. Even though these events have opened many doors and won me a Stanley Cup with Flyers West, I am here to introduce you to another side of me. The human side of me. The passionate side. The cuddly side: the “Ron”.

For whatever your opinions on the artistic qualities of Mac Miller’s “Knock, Knock” song in a vacuum, it’s tough to argue with the sheer awesomeness it brought to see Scott Hartnell, Wayne Simmonds, and co. dance to it in the locker room following a nice Flyers victory last season. That jam has been replaced by… well… this crap.

With a laughably short training camp and all of the ensuing injuries, it should come as no surprise Peter Laviolette has had some trouble coming up with lines that form consistent, instantaneous chemistry for the Flyers. It sure is beginning to look like the head coach may have found something in one unexpected configuration however.
The youthful grouping of Jakub Voracek, Brayden Schenn, and Tye McGinn has exhibited tremendous promise of late, arguably performing better than any trio the Flyers have tried all season. For starters, look no further than their collective contribution to Tuesday night’s 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets – two big goals, including the game winner.

We’re working on recapping some of the action from a meaningful 3-2 Flyers’ road victory on Tuesday evening, but some events just can’t wait – like Winnipeg Jets defenseman Mark Stuart’s introduction to Tye McGinn.

There was a time in recent NHL history when the Flyers completely owned a little startup franchise known as the Atlanta Thrashers. In their 11 seasons of existence, Philadelphia compiled a 30-7-3-3 record against these Thrashers, once posting a 14-game winning streak in the process. We all smiled and laughed, and times were good.

With Monday night’s 5-2 loss at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Flyers fell to 1-6-0 on the road this year. That’s bad news considering it was only the first of a season-long six in a row away from the Wells Fargo Center.
Feb 11, 2013, 3:36 PM EST
Not trying to jinx anything, but the Flyers have a few solid trends on their side this evening in Toronto. Plus, Luke Schenn’s first trip back to Air Canada Centre and James van Riemsdyk’s first game against his old mates.

The post to Carolina goaltender Cam Ward’s right rang out not once, but twice in denial of the Flyers’ advances, its shrill “ping” erasing a pair of golden opportunities in the first period. Ward’s luck would not carry the day however.
Danny Briere’s snipe found cold steel yet again in overtime, only the Flyers finally got the benefit of the bounce. The puck hit the netminder from behind off of the rebound, then finally crossed the goal line to give Philadelphia the 4-3 victory over the Hurricanes – and the two points.
Feb 9, 2013, 1:05 PM EST
The Flyers are unbeaten in regulation since their last meeting with the Carolina Hurricanes a week ago, a 5-3 win to jump start their season and begin the climb out of the Eastern Conference basement. They’ll try to keep the momentum going today at the Wells Fargo Center, with Ilya Bryzgalov in net, and a little extra boost from the return of Wayne Simmonds from a concussion.

Ah, the majestic shootout in all its glory. How we missed thee during the lockout…
Wait a minute. The hell we did!
The Flyers battled the feisty Florida Panthers to a 2-2 tie through regulation and overtime, but because the NHL still insists teams settle the score, a shootout would be the difference between one point or two. Unfortunately, breakaways have been Ilya Bryzgalov’s Kryptonite even amidst the sensational start to his season, while Philadelphia continues to operate on a strict two-goals-per-night budget.
Feb 7, 2013, 5:19 PM EST
Coming off of a gigantic 2-1 victory on Tuesday against an impressive Tampa Bay Lightning squad that’s had their number, the Flyers are searching for their third win in a row, and perhaps more important, some momentum after a slow start pinned them in the Atlantic Division cellar. Enter the Florida Panthers, a sub-.500 opponent the Flyers completely destroyed by a final of 7-1 less than two weeks ago, and expectations for a W are understandably going to be high.

Turning 38 in March, Kimmo Timonen is far more likely to retire than test the free agent market, but it’s beginning to sound like he won’t exercise either of those options. According to multiple reports, Timonen and the Flyers are close to agreeing on a one-year extension, which should help the organization transition into life without the associate captain’s presence.
Feb 6, 2013, 5:33 PM EST
Up north in Toronto, it sounds like James van Riemsdyk is acquitting himself nicely. On Tuesday, the former second-overall pick of the Flyers in 2007 had his second two-goal performance in his new uniform to give him six for the season – tied for seventh in the NHL with eight players.

Musician-turned-film director/producer/screenwriter Rob Zombie is in Philadelphia for awhile to begin preparations for production of his upcoming project, a feature-length movie about the Broad Street Bullies. He visited the Flyers’ locker room ahead of their big win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night (Zombie with the assist?) before stopping by the set of Daily News Live to talk about the film, his love of hockey, the legend of the Bullies… and a few off-color topics as well.

Even for the most staunch supporter of fighting in hockey, watching Zac Rinaldo connect with blow after blow to B.J. Crombeen’s face last night was a pretty brutal sight. In real time, many also questioned whether Rinaldo was still landing punches once Crombeen was down on the ice. Rinaldo apparently wondered as well, and asked the referee after the fight if he did anything wrong. The ref then clears him of any guilt, noting Crombeen was still on his way down to the ice when Rinaldo landed the final blows. [video below]

Earlier in the day, we wrote in our post “Can the Tampa Bay Lightning Be Stopped,” that if the Flyers were going to beat the high-powered Tampa Bay Lightning this evening in South Philadelphia, they’d have get a big-time offensive effort out of Tom Sestito. That’s exactly what transpired in the Flyers 2-1 win over the Lightning.
