It was little more than a formality, but the Flyers were formally invited to the Lord Stanley’s dance by virtue of their 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. Now let’s talk about match-up.

But after watching the Rangers sit atop the conference for months, and after assuming a first round playoff matchup with either the Pens for the past few weeks, might the Flyers be faced with the Blue Shirts in the first round?

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before… The Flyers conceded an early goal, yet tied it up and eventually won. Strike up the music, the band has begun… the Philadelphia Polka.

“It’s another desperate hockey team that needs to win a game,” Lavvy said of tonight’s opponent. “We’ve got to win some games ourself here, so it should be a great hockey game.”

Just when it was beginning to look like the Flyers had solved their home woes, the Wells Fargo Center boards and glass made their presence known. Usually the stanchion will jump out and grab a puck in favor of the home team. Not Tuesday night.

The last time the Flyers took the ice, they halted an 11-game winning streak. The last time they faced the Panthers (March 8), they beat them by a 5-0 count. Tonight, the Panthers return to the Wells Fargo Center clutching a four-game winning streak and sole possession of first place in the Southeast.

Well damn. That’s one bloody way to start a hockey game. The Devils and Rangers clearly dislike each other and they didn’t waste any time getting down to business last night. [video below]

Awful news for the Orange and Black on Monday as the Flyers announce Andrej Meszaros will undergo surgery on his back.

Scott Hartnell’s 35th goal of the season sailed past Marc-Andre Fleury as the final seconds ticked off the clock in overtime, boosting the resilient Flyers to a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over the white-hot Penguins.

A few important storylines converge at the Wells Fargo Center this afternoon, where the Flyers will host the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 12:30 matinee airing on NBC. These are two of the hottest teams in the league. Pittsburgh is unmistakably THE hottest, winning their last 11 games and getting their best player back in the process.

Another early afternoon game, another poor start for the Flyers. They were able to ratchet the effort up in the second half of the game and overcome a 2-0 first period deficit, forcing OT and a shootout, but it’s hard not to think the first 10 minutes cost them a win over the Bruins. Boston scored on each of their shootout attempts, while the Flyers converted two of three, taking the OTL point as consolation.

The Flyers lost two more skaters in Boston on Saturday. They were forced to play most of the game without defenseman Andreas Lilja, who was hit in the neck with a shot that had been deflected, and later Max Talbot, who was injured in a second period fight.

While the Phillies are wearing their annual greens and the nation drowns in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and the NCAA Tournament, the Flyers have themselves quite a matchup as well. Lavvy’s boys are in Boston to face the Bruins (1 PM, CSN), who are not the same team they were when they lifted the Cup last spring, nor even for the first half of the season.

The hockey heads will probably roll their eyes at Bill Simmons writing about hockey. But he does have a unique way of simplifying things down to the bare essentials. He wrote about the L.A. Kings today and focused on Jeff Carter.

Ilya Bryzgalov would eventually allow two goals in the Philadelphia Flyers’ 3-2 win over the New York Islanders, but not before stretching his streak to 249:43, which bested John Vanbiesbrouck’s previous mark set in 1999.
Mar 15, 2012, 6:20 PM EDT
The Flyers are coming off one of their most complete wins of the season, a contest in which they created offensive pressure, took advantage of opportunities, and shut down the Devils attack in front of a third-straight shutout from Ilya Bryzgalov. Oh, and Danny Briere finally found the back of the net, albeit an empty netter. Whatever it takes to get him going again.

Mike Richards hasn’t scored for the Kings since last year! He was awarded a goal last night only to have it taken back.

The Flyers are playing one of their most familiar rivals two days after they last faced them. Not sure there’s a whole lot to add to the narrative in terms of a meaningful preview, but the good news is the home team will be a little healthier than they were on Sunday, when they got smoked. Kimmo and Voracek are back, though Meszaros and Kubina are still out.
