A look at how once again, scoring depth has been the key to a strong Philadelphia Flyers team. But, another spate of Pittsburgh Penguins injuries begs the question, how deep is any NHL team?

Danny Briere was a busy guy on Saturday. Not only did he score all three Flyers goals to earn his fifth career hat trick, but he even mixed it up in a good fight. Thanks to Briere’s toughness and outstanding all-around effort, the Flyers were able to outlast the Ottawa Senators, picking up their two points in the final seconds of overtime.

New York Rangers coach John Tortorella had some choice words for the refs following his team’s victory over the Flyers in the Winter Classic on Monday, noting that their calls were probably influenced by the executives at NBC likely wanting a wild finish. Today, he apologized interestingly: “I tainted the Winter Classic with my mouth,”…

As Philadelphians, we’re quite sad to see that someone who came to watch their New York Rangers, in the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that the Winter Classic provided, couldn’t even come enjoy a South Philly cheesesteak without finding trouble. Regardless of who really started the fight, it just sucks to see. [video below]

Highlights from the 2012 Winter Classic, including video of the performance by The Roots. The 2012 NHL Winter Classic lived up to every bit of hype that has been piled on it over the past year. The teams represented one of the league’s best rivalries, and each side was at the top of the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference for the period leading up to and including game. Unfortunately for Flyers fans, although the net result of participation in the event was positive, the finale was disappointing.
Despite a hard-fought 60 minutes, the Flyers wilted in the third period, and goaltending was—predictably—one of the deciding factors. It’s also a clear difference between the Flyers and the team they trail in the division.
Below, a look at the best and worst the day had to offer.

When it comes to regular season games, there is no greater build up to a single outing in all of North American sports than that which leads up to the NHL’s Winter Classic. After all is said and done, it has no more impact on the standings than the next game will, but don’t be fooled into thinking this game doesn’t matter far more.

Back in August, we hoped that Philly’s own The Roots would be the Winter Classic musical act. It looks like that wish has been granted, with Dan Gross saying they’ll play, though he’s not yet sure in what capacity. Either way, good news to start Winter Classic day…
