The debut of HBO’s 24/7 last night had Flyers fans salivating, and with good reason. Here are our highlights from the show.

While we all knew he had potential, Ilya Bryzgalov was clearly the breakout star of HBO’s 24/7 Flyers/Rangers with his waxing poetic on the universe and killing tigers.

Lavy’s a total badass. Ilya Bryzgalov is the team’s Renaissance man. But damn it if one of the best moments I’ve ever seen on television wasn’t the Flyers apparent celebration routine following games they win.

The Flyers looked fantastic last night in their romp of Dale Hunter’s Washington Capitals, but even in a great win, the orange and black were not without a folly — mostly due to the man in black.

the Flyers may be without their top offensive and defensive players, respectively, but they still have every bit a team that should be expected to be in every game they play.

Bad news for Flyers fans as their leading scorer and most entertaining player, Claude Giroux, is out with a concussion.

References to the Los Angeles Kings as “Flyers West” grew new legs this past summer, when former Flyers captain Mike Richards was traded to Hollywood, followed soon after by the signing of Simon Gagne. Richie and Gags joined a cast of former Orange & Blackers that included such notable former inhabitants of South Philadelphia as coach Terry Murray, assistant coach John Stevens, GM Dean Lombardi, and assistant GM Ron Hextall.
Today, with the Kings sitting at 13-12-4 and having lost four straight, one of the former Flyers lost his gig. However, they’re still pretty Flyer-heavy for the moment; Murray was fired, and Stevens has taken over as interim head coach

The Flyers puppet master will be inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame this evening in Chicago. To help celebrate the achievement, the Flyers website posted this nice tribute to Mr. Snider.

Excitement over the Flyers’ fifth straight win is tempered with the knowledge that Claude Giroux left the game in the second period after a collision saw Wayne Simmonds’ knee hit Giroux in the head. Giroux was low on the ice after a checking attempt, and Simmonds tried to avoid him by jumping over him, but his knee hit Giroux’s helmet pretty hard.
Giroux would leave the game and go up the tunnel, and he didn’t return. On Friday, the Flyers announced that Chris Pronger was out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms, and Brayden Schenn’s previously described upper body injury was updated to be a concussion as well. After Sidney Crosby missed nearly a year with concussion-related symptoms (and is once again being held out as a precaution), nothing could be scarier than a player having a possible concussion.
At least for now, Paul Holmgren is saying Giroux’s removal from the game was a precaution.

The last meeting of the Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning had the rare distinction of garnering league-wide attention for being boring. Peter Laviolette took it upon himself to make a statement that the Flyers weren’t going to play into Guy Boucher’s 1-3-1 trap, employing a stall tactic whereby the Flyers just waded around in their zone while the Lightning refused to forecheck.
It may have been boring from a hockey standpoint, but it certainly isn’t what you see every night on the ice. The tactic worked in some respects, but ultimately it seemed a failure to me. The highest scoring team in the league scored just once and lost, 2-1, in overtime. All signs point to another game of Hockey Chess tonight at the Wells Fargo Center though. Wonder how the home crowd will respond.

Paul Holmgren has updated Chris Pronger’s status to say that while his knee is improving, “he has struggled with other issues that are concussion-like symptoms.”

The past two Flyers games have seen some nastiness and play outside of the rules, which has resulted in one suspension so far with Ville Leino getting a one-game break from the league for his elbow on Matt Read. News of that suspension came during the Flyers-Penguins game last night, when Evgeni Malkin likely narrowly missed being issued a similar fate as a result of missing the head of Claude Giroux on an attempt away from the play.

Fans were calling for some sort of justice, either on-ice or from the league, after former Flyer and current Buffalo Sabre Ville Leino threw an elbow at the head of current Flyers rookie Matt Read in Wednesday night’s game [Video]. The former may not have come to fruition, but the latter did on Thursday night, when dean of discipline Brendan Shanahan issued a one-game suspension to Leino. Here’s his video explaining why.

It’s not just the best hashtag in the Flyers twitterverse, it’s also an effective offensive strategy. Scott Hartnell’s long been known for easily losing his balance, both on purpose and at times not as intentionally. He’s a magnet for the net and often the opposing goalie, and the player and some of his social media-savvy teammates have been embracing the #hartnelldown lately.
Tonight, just about everyone was up for some Hartnell Down, as #19 scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal while crashing into the left post in spectacular fashion.
Highlights and a bit more on the game below, including Hartnell’s shoutout to the hashtag.

Last season, the very first game the Flyers played was against their current top rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins. They helped to open a new arena in western PA, although not quite the way the home team would have wanted. This year, we’ve had to wait more than a quarter of the season to see Jaromir Jagr and Max Talbot face their former club, which we’ll finally get to do tonight.

We are now less than one month away from the 2012 Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park and just six days away from the premiere of HBO’s Flyers-Rangers 24/7 series. With things starting to come together and take shape, we’re back with another one of these amusing time lapses, slowly (or, I guess, quickly) revealing the changes to CBP in preparation for the week-long outdoor events schedule.
