Highlights from the 2012 Winter Classic, including video of the performance by The Roots. The 2012 NHL Winter Classic lived up to every bit of hype that has been piled on it over the past year. The teams represented one of the league’s best rivalries, and each side was at the top of the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference for the period leading up to and including game. Unfortunately for Flyers fans, although the net result of participation in the event was positive, the finale was disappointing.
Despite a hard-fought 60 minutes, the Flyers wilted in the third period, and goaltending was—predictably—one of the deciding factors. It’s also a clear difference between the Flyers and the team they trail in the division.
Below, a look at the best and worst the day had to offer.

When it comes to regular season games, there is no greater build up to a single outing in all of North American sports than that which leads up to the NHL’s Winter Classic. After all is said and done, it has no more impact on the standings than the next game will, but don’t be fooled into thinking this game doesn’t matter far more.

Back in August, we hoped that Philly’s own The Roots would be the Winter Classic musical act. It looks like that wish has been granted, with Dan Gross saying they’ll play, though he’s not yet sure in what capacity. Either way, good news to start Winter Classic day…

With player families taking the ice for a skate after practice, Claude Giroux’s sister made her boyfriend a lucky man. After consultation with the NHL’s top scorer, Isabelle Giroux’s boyfriend proposed to her on the ice earlier today. Watch the video below for what may be the best Citizens Bank Park proposal of all time, as well as the best advice of a soon-to-be brother-in-law on how to man up…

Not sure what the format is for the televised practice, but those folks who are eating up everything and anything Winter Classic may want to flip over to the NHL Network at 11 p.m. to see what it’s all about.

Jaromir Jagr’s been on fire in his return to Pittsburgh, where his former home fans are booing him incessantly. He scored a brilliant goal and gave his trademark salute right at this gentleman in one of those light blue Sidney Crosby jerseys, who happened to be giving him the finger.

We’re not quite halfway through the NHL season, but Jaromir Jagr’s tour of NHL bridges he’s somehow burned is nearly complete. He’s been to DC and Manhattan already, and tonight, he’ll skate in front of the fans for whom he was at several times a Cup winner and MVP.

EA Sports did one of their simulations to see how the Winter Classic between the Flyers and Rangers at Citizens Bank Park on January 2nd. According to their sim, the Flyers will win 3-1, which is nice. But my favorite part is the simulations ability to already know that Ilya Bryzgalov will in fact be in net. It will also snow, apparently.

In tonight’s Flyers-Lightning preview, we mentioned these two teams don’t like each other much, and wondered what make its way into the next episode of HBO’s 24/7. There’s been plenty of scrapping and jawing going on so far, and one full throw-down between Wayne Simmonds and Tampa defenseman Eric Brewer. It didn’t go so well for Brewer, who needed help getting off the ice, stumbling and bleeding after some big connections. [Video]

Just about every night he’s on the ice, Claude Giroux does something worth tuning in for. He added another highlight against the Lightning on Tuesday night, when he found… himself… with a great pass, then put a shot on net that Scott Hartnell finished up to tie the game at 1-1. Check out the video here.
