    Dec 20, 2011, 11:28 AM EDT

We know Ilya Bryzgalov is a big history buff so it’s no surprise his new custom mask for the Winter Classic pays tribute to some of the great Philly sports icons. Mike Schmidt, Reggie White, Dr. J, Bobby Clarke, and the Phillie Phanatic are all featured prominently on the new goalie mask. Veterans Stadium also makes a nice appearance.

The obsession with brand new custom-painted goalie masks isn’t reserved for those who still play in the NHL. In fact, legendary Flyers goalie Bernie Parent will join in Mask Mania by getting a replica of his old plain white mask airbrushed up with classic imagery from his days as a Flyer so he can wear the newly designed mask in the lead up to the Winter Classic. It will then be auctioned off for charity. [check out the sweet video below]

  8. Game 32Flyers Out to Get Past Bruins Loss, But Not Forget It

    Dec 19, 2011, 7:01 PM EDT

There’s probably not a whole lot of small details or minor lessons the Flyers or any of us fans want to remember about Saturday’s absolute ass-kicking at the hands of the Boston Bruins. One thing’s for sure though, while they need to move on and play as if that game didn’t happen, it was a good wake-up call that they’re not quite where they need to be. Right now, they’re good enough to have a fun regular season ride with all the usual ups and downs. But are they good enough to make a deep playoff run, or go all the way to a Cup?

While it was only one game, that 6-0 loss to last year’s champs was indeed a measuring stick, and the Flyers came up very short. Of course, they were without some key players, including their top forward and top defenseman, and it appears we’ll get the former back soon. But the latter may never be, and Saturday should show the Flyers the level they need to aspire for between now and, way down the road, the playoffs.

The road continues in Denver tonight, where the Flyers begin a five-game road trip with a 9PM start against the Avalanche. A former Cup-winning goalie tandem highlights the storylines.

  9. Could William Penn Be Gearing Up for Winter Classic?

    Dec 19, 2011, 3:44 PM EDT

Mike Falciani, an eagle-eyed The700Level.com reader, sent us this photo taken this afternoon of City Hall as seen from 1500 Market Street. From what we can tell, it looks like the old jersey William Penn, who sits high atop the building looking down on us, wore during the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals when the Flyers played the Detroit Red Wings.

  12. Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory of the Skating of Giroux

    Dec 18, 2011, 3:12 PM EDT

It may not mean he’s close to returning just yet, but Claude Giroux is at least skating with the Flyers in Colorado this afternoon. The team posted this pic of him donning the yellow non-contact gear, which is quite a relieving sight even if we don’t yet know what it means for his return to game play.

  16. Nice 4-3 Win in Montreal Brings Some Holiday Cheer to Somber Flyers Nation

    Dec 15, 2011, 10:44 PM EDT

The mood among Flyers faithful was rather somber on Thursday night as word of Chris Pronger being out for the entire season hit Twitter and eventually the game’s telecast itself. Never easy to hear such bad news. The Flyers who were on the ice did their best to try and cheer the down orange and black fans by delivering a nice road victory.
