As Matt mentioned on Twitter last night during player introductions, these really were introductions, what with so many new Flyers taking the ice at the Wells Fargo Center for the first time and all.

The Flyers faithful came into Wednesday night’s home opener with high expectations following the team’s 2-0 start to the season on the road. The South Philly opener was ugly at times, but the orange and black sent the fans home happy with a 5-4 victory. The Flyers showed that while the Giroux and Jagr are the star-studded line to watch, the team is well-balanced, with nine different players registering at least a point in tonight’s win.

One week into the new NHL season, we’re excited to see the Flyers putting up a pair of road wins against rival clubs, including the defending Stanley Cup champs. Hell, we’re just excited to have hockey back to rid us of the memories of last season’s collapse, the early departure for the 2011 Phillies, and whatever the hell the Eagles are doing to us.

After kicking off their season in exciting fashion on Thursday night by defeating the Bruins 2-1 on their home ice, the Flyers will look to spoil another home opener tonight, this time up the Jersey Turnpike.

The Flyers kick off the 2011-2012 season tonight up in Boston against a Bruins team that ended their season a year ago. But it’s a new era in Flyers hockey and it starts tonight.

With all the new faces at the Skate Zone this year, it’s been a pretty exciting camp for the Flyers. Amidst massive roster turnover came some interesting position battles, and a few weeks ago, it became clear that some good players would not make this team. Some would head to Glens Falls to at least begin the season playing for the Phantoms, while others would be gone entirely.

The Flyers won again last night, taking their mostly meaningless but nonetheless enjoyable preseason record to 4-1-1. More important than the win, their powerplay unit was clicking again, scoring both of their goals en route to the 2-1 victory over the Devils.

Tonight will be the first chance we get to see Chris Pronger with the ‘C’ on his jersey as the new captain is set to see his first action of the season. It’s somewhat surprising to see Pronger in the lineup as most expected him to see the ice for the first time in the regular season, but perhaps seeing some game speeds — even if preseason — can help him gauge his where he stands.

The league won’t be too happy with some of the storylines coming out of the encore to the Winter Classic announcement, a preseason game between the Flyers and the Rangers that had all the bitterness of a playoff elimination game. Another Flyer could be on his way to a suspension, and worse, less than a week after being on the receiving end of a hateful act of prejudice, Wayne Simmonds is alleged to yelled a homophobic slur at Sean Avery of the Rangers. More on that here.
It’s a shame to be focusing on Simmonds’ embarrassing decision rather than what we tune in for—the sport itself. There is plenty we’d rather be talking about, with Jaromir Jagr making his debut in front of Flyer fans (as one of their own, anyway) and tallying a pair of powerplay goals and an assist. The Flyers won by a 5-3 count, and Matt Read impressed once again.

The preseason’s not even over yet, and the Flyers are in all likelihood about to have their second player suspended. Jody Shelley was the first to receive a detailed video explanation by new disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan, and I’ll be shocked if Tom Sestito doesn’t join him tomorrow. In the first period of what would become a rough preseason tilt between the Flyers and the New York Rangers, Sestito took a few full strides before smearing Andre Deveaux from behind. Unfortunately, Wayne Simmonds is said to have yelled a homophobic slur at Sean Avery.

The Flyers are back in action tonight at the Wells Fargo Center for the fifth of their seventh preseason games of the season. They’ll go up against the team they sparred with at a press conference at Citizens Bank Park earlier this afternoon, the New York Rangers.
