The latest installment in our year-long series of Flyer Fights.

Claude Giroux, Matt Read, and Wayne Simmonds scored goals, and the Flyers earned their first shutout since the 09-10 season, defeating the New Jersey Devils 3-0.

After kicking off their season in exciting fashion on Thursday night by defeating the Bruins 2-1 on their home ice, the Flyers will look to spoil another home opener tonight, this time up the Jersey Turnpike.

Thought last night’s festivities were a bit over the top? So did Claude Giroux.

The Flyers kick off the 2011-2012 season tonight up in Boston against a Bruins team that ended their season a year ago. But it’s a new era in Flyers hockey and it starts tonight.

A look at the chain of events that sent the Flyers into perhaps their greatest off-season upheaval in franchise history, plus some thoughts on the finished product.

The Flyers just made their opening night roster official for their game tomorrow against the Boston Bruins. The full 22 players are listed below. In addition, Oskars Bartulis will be assigned to the Phantoms.

In a move reminiscent of the Flyers losing Glen Metropolit to the Canadiens via waivers just before the trade deadline in 2009, the Habs have again plucked a coveted fourth-liner from Philadelphia, claiming Blair Betts off waivers today.

With all the new faces at the Skate Zone this year, it’s been a pretty exciting camp for the Flyers. Amidst massive roster turnover came some interesting position battles, and a few weeks ago, it became clear that some good players would not make this team. Some would head to Glens Falls to at least begin the season playing for the Phantoms, while others would be gone entirely.

The Flyers won again last night, taking their mostly meaningless but nonetheless enjoyable preseason record to 4-1-1. More important than the win, their powerplay unit was clicking again, scoring both of their goals en route to the 2-1 victory over the Devils.

Tonight will be the first chance we get to see Chris Pronger with the ‘C’ on his jersey as the new captain is set to see his first action of the season. It’s somewhat surprising to see Pronger in the lineup as most expected him to see the ice for the first time in the regular season, but perhaps seeing some game speeds — even if preseason — can help him gauge his where he stands.

The league won’t be too happy with some of the storylines coming out of the encore to the Winter Classic announcement, a preseason game between the Flyers and the Rangers that had all the bitterness of a playoff elimination game. Another Flyer could be on his way to a suspension, and worse, less than a week after being on the receiving end of a hateful act of prejudice, Wayne Simmonds is alleged to yelled a homophobic slur at Sean Avery of the Rangers. More on that here.
It’s a shame to be focusing on Simmonds’ embarrassing decision rather than what we tune in for—the sport itself. There is plenty we’d rather be talking about, with Jaromir Jagr making his debut in front of Flyer fans (as one of their own, anyway) and tallying a pair of powerplay goals and an assist. The Flyers won by a 5-3 count, and Matt Read impressed once again.

The preseason’s not even over yet, and the Flyers are in all likelihood about to have their second player suspended. Jody Shelley was the first to receive a detailed video explanation by new disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan, and I’ll be shocked if Tom Sestito doesn’t join him tomorrow. In the first period of what would become a rough preseason tilt between the Flyers and the New York Rangers, Sestito took a few full strides before smearing Andre Deveaux from behind. Unfortunately, Wayne Simmonds is said to have yelled a homophobic slur at Sean Avery.

The Flyers are back in action tonight at the Wells Fargo Center for the fifth of their seventh preseason games of the season. They’ll go up against the team they sparred with at a press conference at Citizens Bank Park earlier this afternoon, the New York Rangers.
Sep 26, 2011, 3:55 PM EDT
Perhaps the best moment came when the Rangers GM Glen Sather started talking smack about the Flyers and how New York beat them on the way to Stanley Cups back in the day. Ed Snider fired right back.

One of the main things we’ll be looking for out of the announcement is a first look at the official Winter Classic jerseys the Flyers will be wearing. Hopefully they’ll fill in some of the fun details about all of the events surrounding the game as well.

We took a night off from Flyers preseason action last night, despite it being Jaromir Jagr’s debut in the color orange. It was hard not to continually peek at the scores (even harder given that I get text updates with every one), and see that Jags factored heavily into the Flyers’ 3-1 win over the Red Wings in Detroit. With moves like Jagr, it’s no surprise… (you kinda need to see the video below, which isn’t of last night’s goal or assist, but… you need to see it.)

The Flyers are back on the ice this evening in Detroit for more exciting preseason hockey (7:30 pm, 610 WIP). Tonight’s game against the Red Wings will mark the debut of Jaromir Jagr in a Flyers uniform. The game will not be televised but per a tweet from Flyers beat writer Sam Carchidi we believe the game will be watchable on the Flyers website.

I’m at a loss for words regarding what happened in London, Ontario, tonight. With the Flyers and Red Wings playing an exhibition game, the Flyers came back from an early deficit to end regulation tied. After a scoreless overtime, the teams went to a shootout. According to Frank Seravalli of the Daily News, a fan threw a banana onto the ice as Wayne Simmonds attempted his shot. Simmonds, who came to the Flyers as part of the trade for Mike Richards, is black.

Analysis of Brendan Shanahan and the NHL’s new goal of player safety and disciplinary transparency, based on the example of Philadelphia Flyer Jody Shelley’s lengthy suspension for boarding Darryl Boyce of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I took this shot of the jumbotron at Citizens Bank Park prior to this evening’s game against the Washington Nationals. I wonder if the 2012 Winter Classic logo has anything to do with the big announcement the NHL will be making early next week?

A Level reader sent along a link to the follow video promoting the 2012 Winter Classic between the Flyers and Rangers at Citizens Bank Park. We’re not entirely sure if it’s an official video or not, but it’s well done either way. It also features a logo of the Winter Classic with the Liberty Bell in it, something we have not seen before either. [video below]
