There weren’t a ton of offensive fireworks in San Francisco in the series opener on Thursday night, but what little there were started the game off right for the Philadelphia Phillies, and Cliff Lee took care of the rest. Hunter Pence homered for the first time in a Phillies uniform (and soon after showed off a new dugout handshake), and John Mayberry Jr did the same in the next at bat. Pence would later single in an unnecessary insurance run in the ninth, rewarding his growing fanbase back on the east coast.
Lee outdueled Madison Bumgarner on a night when both pitchers had some great stuff. He got into a jam in the eighth, but pitched his way out of it without letting up a run, then came out in the ninth to cap his fifth complete game shutout of the season. T-Mac pointed out that it was the first time a Phillie racked up five shutouts in a season since Steve Carlton in 1982.

Kyle Kendrick threw one of the best outings of his career, Ryan Howard bashed two homers, and the Phils cruised to a 5-0 victory. But it was their postgame music we noticed.

The Phillies will look to win yet another series this evening as Kyle Kendrick (5-5, 3.52) will take on Colorado Rockies right-hander Aaron Cook (2-5, 5.05). Cook has not fared well against the Phillies throughout his career, having gone 1-6 with a 6.05 ERA in 11 career starts. He hasn’t beaten them since way back on April 27th of 2006 in Philly.

The 2011 MLB trade deadline has come and gone, with the exception of a potential smaller post-deadline deal for a Matt Stairsian type power bat off the bench, the Phillies have the team they’ll be chasing their World Series dreams with. Suffice to say, it’s a pretty darn good one. They just finished up a successful 10-game homestand by adding an All-Star right fielder, sweeping the Pirates, and going 7-3 over that stretch.

When Charlie Manuel handed over Saturday night’s lineup card—the first with ‘Pence’ scrawled below ‘Howard’—it included a whopping eight players who have been All-Stars at least once in their career. In fact, all but two have been All-Stars more than once. Here’s a look at the ASG resumes of last night’s Phillies starters, plus today’s lineup and pitching matchup.

While we assume the Phillies’ most notable trade deadline strike has already come, as it has in previous years, on Ruben Amaro Jr Day, July 29th, the official trade deadline is today, and there could still be a new pinstriper or two by the time the clock ticks 4 PM.
