That’s more like it. The Philadelphia Phillies have completed their seventh series victory in their last seven match ups. The win against the rival Mets stretches the club’s record to 29-16 against the NL East, the best intra-division win-loss in all of baseball.

So far in this Phillies-Mets series, both teams have gotten their asses handed to them in one game while playing the role of the ass-handers in the other. Yesterday’s loss was something of an embarrassment for the Phils, with Cole Hamels once again getting knocked around by the Mets, who must be in the fine print in the contract he signed with the devil to get that changeup. Meanwhile, the offense was weak, making Jon Niese look like the Cy Young candidate pitching that day.
Today it’s Kyle Kendrick and Mike Pelfrey, with the Mets getting their second of two non-Ace starts this series due to Bruce Bochy using up both of Roy Halladay’s and Cliff Lee’s next turns in the All-Star Game.
Pelfrey is coming off of two straight solid starts, with his last, a 2-ER effort in San Francisco, being squandered via some offensive ineptitude. The Phillies have faced Pelfrey three times this season and tuned him up for 12 earned runs in 14 innings.
Neither offense is intact today, so no excuses about which Phils bats aren’t in the lineup. They have should have enough to get to Pelfrey.
With yesterday’s win, the Mets climbed a game above .500. I don’t like that one bit. Time to wipe that smug off their heads, take them back to decidedly average, and let the Nats climb ahead of them in the middling, non-threatening portion of the NL East standings (heading into Sunday’s action: Mets 11 GB, Nats 11.5).
If the Phils turn in another performance like yesterday’s, there’s always the women’s World Cup Final featuring the US and Japan at 2 PM.

Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal touches a few bases with respect to what the Phillies might do at the upcoming MLB trade deadline in his column today. Although rival clubs say the Phils are putting it out there that they can only add about $2 million in salary, the rest of the league has come to know that what we’ve seen from Ruben Amaro Jr in recent acquisition periods is likely to continue in some way later this month. No, they won’t be adding another ace (at least, I doubt it). But they will do something.

Cole Hamels’ struggles in the city of New York continue. The All-Star left-hander is now a stinging 1-10 lifetime in starts made on the road in NY.

With last night’s 7-2 final in Flushing Meadows, the Phillies have put themselves in position to claim their seventh straight series victory with a win Saturday. And, considering the pitching match up, the odds don’t look half bad, as Cole Hamels squares off against Jon Niese.

If the baseball season ended today…

It’s been days since we’ve gotten to experience one of those. Unlike last season, when the Phillies stumbled into the second half after the All-Star break, the Phillies wasted no time getting back to where they left off last week. They rode the fine play of Raul Ibanez, John Mayberry, and the solid pitching of Worley and the pen to beat the Mets 7-2. As they should.

MLB trade deadline approaching and the Phillies have a need for a right handed bat and some help out of the bullpen. Can Ruben Amaro Jr. fill the holes in the roster?

Ahh, thank goodness. The Phillies are back in action this evening up in New York.

Your bittersweet Phillies DL news of the day is that Placido Polanco has officially hit the DL, retroactive to July 5, with an inflamed lower back, but the bullpen has its anchor in place once again, with Ryan Madson returning.

Enrico picked up the early leg of our comprehensive ESPYS coverage last night, noting that the Eagles’ Miracle at the New Meadowlands won the award for best game. (You may recall your humble narrator was at that shizz.) Turns out the Birds weren’t the only local winners, with Roy Halladay’s name finding its way onto a pair of awards. Doc’s no-hitter over the Reds in the playoffs won “Best Moment,” while the man himself won Best MLB Player.

Save for 1999 when Paul Byrd, Mike Lieberthal, and Curt Schilling were All-Stars, the Phillies sent a lone player to the All-Star game every year from 1996-2001. In looking over the list of Phillies All-Stars, one name caught my eye in a “you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me-this-guy-made-an-all-star-team” sort of way. That name?

Those in attendance at today’s Phillies game were truly enjoying this victory long before the final pitch was actually thrown. In fact, they took the opportunity late in the game — likely egged on by the Phillie Phanatic who was behind the Phis duggout — to use the Atlanta Braves’ rallying cry, the Tomahawk Chop, against them.
