While last night wasn’t necessarily the pitchers’ duel you usually get in a walkoff 1-0 game, the lack of offense was nonetheless its hallmark. Despite having some command issues, Vance Worley allowed just one hit, and the bullpen conceded the same amount in the final three innings. Two-hit in the opener, the A’s now face Cole Hamels, the NL’s WHIP leader, who is trying to become the first NL pitcher to 10 wins.

For most of the night, the only thing really laughable in the Philadelphia Phillies-Oakland A’s series opener was the inability by either team to get a hit. Credit both sides’ defenses with a lot of that, because despite carrying dual no-hitters into the sixth inning, the starting pitching wasn’t exactly crisp all night. Vance Worley allowed just one hit in six innings, but part of his no-hit effectiveness included walking four batters. A’s starter Guillermo Moscoso let up two hits over seven, walking three of his own.
It wasn’t a terrible night for Worley, who also struck out four. But he wasn’t thrilled with his outing, taking a moment in the post-game press appearance to have some fun at his own expense.

Ryan Howard bashes in St. Louis. We’ve guessed it’s the home cooking, others have guessed Howard is so happy there because he sees old friendly faces, but whatever the reason is, he does indeed hit well at the Busch Stadium. The Big Piece hit his 9th home run at the new St. Louis ball park,…

Cliff Lee had one of those nights that reminds you just how good it is to be a Philadelphia Phillies fan these days. Lee threw a complete game shutout against the St. Louis Cardinals, allowing only six hits, walking the first batter of the game, and striking out a very un-Lee-like three batters.
Lee, after noting he was unhappy about throwing seven straight balls to begin the game, actually admitted he was quite happy with the complete game shutout victory. He’s not the only one.

Word first broke via the Lehigh Valley IronPigs twitter around 9:40 pm EST that the Phillie Phanatic was sidelined during his trip to Coca-Cola Park after being hit by a foul ball.
“The Phanatic will not perform again tonight as a precautionary measure after being hit by a foul ball,” was the official word.

Cliff Lee has been filthy in his three most recent starts at Citizens Bank Park (1 ER in 24.0 innings, good for a 0.38), but is winless (0-3) over his last four road starts. So, what’s the deal with the differential, everyone wonders. “Whatever,” Cliff would likely say.
Lee (7-5, 3.12) will take on former Phillies Kyle Lohse (7-3, 2.88) who is having a fine season for the Cardinals.

After being silent through most of the game, the Phillies erupted (with a lot of help from the Cardinals bullpen) in the eighth.

Roy Halladay (9-3, 2.56) will attempt to win his 10th game of the season and will take on Kyle McClellan (6-3, 3.96). He’s faced the Phillies six times, but never as a starting pitcher. In 10 innings of work McClellan has given up 8 hits, 5 earned, and struck out 10 while walking 3.

Howard, who has also posted a .694 slugging percentage and a .509 OBP at Busch for his career, has reached base safely in 22 of his 23 games.

As avid Phillies fans are well aware of, Charlie Manuel spent a couple of years playing bll in Japan, showing off his hitting skills as a member of the Yakult Swallows and Kintetsu Buffaloes.
As legend has it, Manuel was known as “Aka-Ono” or The Red Devil by Japanese fans and teammates. So it’s no surprise he can still toss around some of the lingo he learned way back in the 70′s.

Phillies reliever Mike Stutes has made a quick impression on Philadelphia fans, mostly by turning into a very reliable arm out of the pen in his first season in the bigs, but also for bringing some flare to the team along with his game.
Stutes brought even more of his personality to the Internet this weekend by embracing Twitter at the behest of former minor league teammate Michael Schwimer. Stutes presence on Twitter seems to be a welcomed one, with the youngster taking more of a Logan Morrison-like approach to the social networking site as opposed to the official marketing releases-like approach of his teammate, Jimmy Rollins.

Phillies fans may not have known who Jason Vargas was before this afternoon’s game, but after a 3 hit, complete game shutout of our first place baseball team, we’ll certainly remember it.
