So by now we’re all done popping champagne over the selection of USC power forward/center Nikola Vucevic at #16 in this year’s draft and we can come back down to earth a little and talk about what we actually have here. It seems like a lot of fans are pretty down on the guy, and I can’t really blame em. At Nikola’s first media interview as a Sixer, I couldn’t even think of anything good to ask him because the only questions I had for him were insulting ones. How do you think a slow, unathletic guy like you is gonna fit in on a team of run-and-gunners? Do you think you’ll be able to beat out Spencer Hawes for the team’s position of skilled-but-largely-ineffective white starting big man? Do the names “Samuel Dalembert” and “Shawn Bradley” mean anything to you?

Following in the footsteps of the Philadelphia Eagles less than two months ago, the Philadelphia 76ers have drafted a Temple Owl. With the 50th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, the Sixers have selected 6’9 power forward Lavoy Allen. This is the first Owl selected by the 76ers since Mark Karcher was chosen 48th overall in 2000.

But will Iguodala be dealt at all? That remains the biggest question. As one Sporting News article points out, the looming lockout is making a draft day deal for a guy like Dre ($) much more difficult.
Kate Fagan echoes those sentiments, also noting that the change in ownership could hinder an Iguodala deal as well. She goes as far as saying things this morning were “very quiet” around the team.

For a number of reasons—the excellent post-season that just finished, the looming threat of a lockout, the relatively weak pool of talent to choose from—the 2011 NBA draft has been the least-buzzed-about draft the sport has seen in recent memory. Though there’s some intrigue due to the inevitable surge of trade rumors around this time of the year (none the least of which involving our own Andre Iguodala), the lack of any real marquee names and the involvement of a whole lot of unknown quantities in this draft has taken a lot of the sizzle out of it—and that’s for the teams drafting at the top. For our beloved Philadelphia 76ers, selecting this year with the 16th and 50th pick, things are even more muddled and less exciting.
