  2. JVR Visits PPL Park Again, Gets a Union Custom Jersey

    Sep 16, 2011, 11:07 AM EDT

On Saturday night, I’ll be at PPL Park for the third time in 11 days. Pretty standard stuff for your average Philadelphia Union fan. But the park got a return visit from a more notable fan yesterday, when Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk came to kick it around with Danny Califf for awhile.

The U had a custom 21 van Riemsdyk jersey waiting for him, as well as a sweet pair of Adidas Predators.

  3. Portlandia: Union Need the Three Points at Home Against the Timbers

    Sep 10, 2011, 6:53 PM EDT

The Union, looking to snap a seven game winless streak, host the expansion Portland Timbers at PPL Park tonight (7:30PM/The Comcast Network).

  4. Union Play to a Most Exciting 4-4 Tie Against Revolution

    Sep 8, 2011, 11:27 AM EDT

The Union needed a win pretty badly, and it looked for a long while like they were in store for an absolute thrashing, but Le Toux led an impressive second-half charge that brought them back from down 3 goals and earned them a point.

  5. MacMath Gets First Test As Union and New England Both Search For a Win

    Sep 7, 2011, 6:19 PM EDT

You want storylines? I’ll give you storylines. How about two teams, each winless over their last six games, facing each other? Check. A rookie keeper, drafted #5 overall, thrust into the starting lineup for the first time due to an injury to the team captain and lone MLS All-Star? Check. A rescheduled game being played mid-week thanks to a hurricane? Check.

  6. Union’s Woes Now Extend to Faryd Mondragon’s Fractured Finger

    Sep 6, 2011, 8:18 AM EDT

The Union have ended the summer on a decidedly down note, winless since mid-July. To make their most recent loss, a 2-1 defeat in Salt Lake City, that much more painful, goalkeeper and team captain Faryd Mondragon fractured the ring finger on his right hand.

As you can see here, Mondragon’s headed to surgery this morning, and his tweet yesterday said he’ll be out 2-4 weeks.

  7. It’s Getting to the Point Where the Union Need Three Points

    Sep 3, 2011, 4:54 PM EDT

Due to bad weather the Union have not played a league match in two weeks. Due to poor play the Union have not won a league game in over six weeks — going 0-2-3 over that stretch. The Union, who look to get back to their winning ways, will face Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium (9PM/The Comast Network).

  8. Hurricane Irene Could Cancel Your Sports Viewing Plans

    Aug 26, 2011, 12:46 PM EDT

The hurricane that is swirling out over the Atlantic Ocean could really put a damper on sporting events this weekend up and down the entire East Coast. The Philadelphia Union’s game scheduled for Sunday against the New England Revolution has already been pushed back to September 7th, and the Phillies have moved their Sunday game to a Saturday 1:05 start.

  10. The Pretty Blonde in Front of You Might Be the Player You Ripped On’s Fiancee

    Aug 15, 2011, 11:14 AM EDT

Ahhh, you hate when the pretty blonde sitting in front of you at a sporting event is the fiance of the player you just ripped on to her face.

  14. Klinsmann Era Begins Here in Philly

    Aug 10, 2011, 5:04 PM EDT

Philadelphia will be the center of the American soccer world tonight as Jurgen Klinsmann makes his debut as coach of the U.S. national team against regional rival Mexico (9PM/ESPN2). I don’t think I am going out on a limb here by stating this will be the most heavily scrutinized friendly in the history of U.S. Soccer. It’s a perfect storm of soccer storylines, and it will all come to head this evening at Lincoln Financial Field.

  15. Houston Visits PPL Park as Union Look to Reclaim First Place

    Aug 6, 2011, 5:29 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Union host the Houston Dynamo and PPL Park in Major League Soccer action.

  16. Pauno-Struck: Veljko Hits From Distance, But Union Manage Only Tie

    Aug 4, 2011, 8:17 AM EDT

The Union put another point on their 2011 total to keep pace in a tight top of the Eastern Conference table. They weren’t able to hold on to a first half lead though, with the Chicago Fire tying things up for good in the early stages of the second half.

  17. The U Who Play the Fire

  21. Union Youth Make Most of Everton Opportunity

    Jul 21, 2011, 3:51 PM EDT

It was just a friendly. Neither side fielded their full complement of players. The Union are in midseason form, while Everton are touring the US in pre-season mode. All appropriate disclaimers acknowledged, it still felt good to see the Philadelphia Union beat Everton FC at PPL Park last night. The final score read 1-0, but the Union controlled most of the game, and had a few golden opportunities narrowly miss on a night when pristine finishing eluded them. Their younger players had a chance to play hard against an esteemed English side, and they played their asses off.

  22. That Time I Watched 90 Minutes of a Soccer Game Featuring No U.S.A.Philly Team

    Jul 21, 2011, 1:11 PM EDT

To prepare myself a bit for Saturday night’s showdown at the Linc between the Philadelphia Union and Real Madrid, I actually watched all 90 minutes of a soccer game between two teams I have no connection to. What have I become?

  23. Extra Time: Friendly Week Links, No Tim Howard Tonight, But Plenty to Talk About

    Jul 20, 2011, 10:27 AM EDT

The Union are set to take on Everton of the English Premier League later tonight at PPL Park, followed by Real Madrid at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday. That’s quite a week of meaningless footie right there, and I’m really looking forward to it.

Here’s a quick compilation of Union extras that are floating around this week.

  24. This Is Coming to the Linc on Saturday

    Jul 18, 2011, 6:26 PM EDT

Watch this amazing goal by Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid against LA Galaxy

  25. Union Dominate New England, Who Remind Us How Good We Have It

    Jul 18, 2011, 8:07 AM EDT

The Union ended their long road swing with a 3-0 throttling of a struggling New England Revolution club at Gillette Stadium. The U came out firing and controlled the run of play throughout the first half, beginning with some attacking waves that would earn them a lead they’d hold throughout.
