  1. Sheanon Williams scores beautiful goal that lands him on SportsCenter, decides random fan deserves a hug

    Jun 6, 2013, 3:15 PM EDT

If you watch the video above, you’ll not only see Sheanon Williams score a sensational goal last night but you’ll also see the Union defender make a beeline to the stands to share a warm embrace with one or two very excited fans. Seems like that must have been an emotional moment for Williams, getting…

  2. Videos: Conor Casey’s Beautiful Diving Header Plus Sheanon Williams’ Nifty Finish

    Jun 6, 2013, 7:45 AM EDT

Wednesday night was a tough one for local soccer haters after the Union’s offense exploded for three goals in their victory over the Columbus Crew down at PPL Park in Chester (more here). It was a picturesque evening for some footie on the river. The first goal from Brian Carroll was a fairly routine rip…

  3. MATCHDAY: It’s a Beautiful Day to Play Hooky – Your Phillies/Union Twinbill Itinerary

    Jun 5, 2013, 11:02 AM EDT

So the weather today is just about the most perfect thing ever, amirite? If you’re already at work, start coughing now. Or just “grab a coffee” and get the hell out of there. If you’re not at work yet, DON’T DO IT! For the first time in a while, you can walk up to Citizens…

  4. Philadelphia Union Player Doesn’t Know How to Proceed with Life After Sunday’s Wild ‘Game of Thrones’

    Jun 4, 2013, 12:33 PM EDT

Sunday night’s wild penultimate episode of Game of Thrones’ third season elicited some intense reactions from its millions of adoring fans. What a twist! Here are a couple dozen gallons of blood for you to enjoy! Hot Clicks posted the below video roundup of people reacting to the crazy ending — WARNING SPOILERS DON’T WATCH…

  5. Philadelphia Union players, coaches thrilled to see openly gay soccer player Robbie Rogers return to MLS

    May 31, 2013, 2:54 PM EDT

CHESTER, Pa. – The Philadelphia Union were in Florida for the preseason three months ago when former US national team player Robbie Rogers wrote a blog post in which he simultaneously revealed he was gay while retiring from professional soccer. Then, came the overwhelming support. In large numbers, it seemed, athletes took to social media…

  6. MATCHDAY: Union Begin U.S. Open Cup vs. Ocean City (Yes, That Ocean City)

    May 28, 2013, 11:45 AM EDT

One of the most confusing things for new soccer fans to understand are that teams cam play in multiple competitions at once. In England, for example, teams like Chelsea and Manchester United can take part in four different competitions at once. There’s the English Premier League — which is structured just as you might think.…

  7. MATCHDAY: Union Head North to Montreal; Robbie Rogers’ Milestone Day in MLS

    May 25, 2013, 3:55 PM EDT

    Robbie Rogers

While you trade in your usual Memorial Day Weekend swim trunks and beer for a hoodie and hot chocolate (seriously, WTH?), you might want to ignore the Phillies for one night (because you know you’ll just be annoyed anyway). The Union travel to Montreal (7 p.m., The Comcast Network) to face a team just ahead…

  8. Union CEO on New York City expansion team: “The best thing about it is now we have another team to dislike”

    May 23, 2013, 11:54 AM EDT

CHESTER, Pa. – My esteemed 700 Level colleague Steve Moore has already written a good breakdown of what Tuesday’s monumental announcement of a new expansion MLS franchise in New York City will mean for American soccer. I’m just here to follow in his footsteps and provide a little actual reporting on the subject. And by…

  9. New York City FC — Another (Richer) New York Rival for the Union

    May 22, 2013, 7:39 AM EDT

I had originally planned something for today about the Union’s 1-0 victory last weekend and HUGE game in Montreal this coming weekend. But that can wait a day or two. Today’s big Major League Soccer news is all about New York — because when are things not about New York? The league announced Tuesday that…

  10. McInerney Scores Early as Union Hold On to Beat Chicago

    May 19, 2013, 12:02 PM EDT

Philadelphia Union scoring machine Jack McInerney found the back of the net yet again on Saturday at PPL Park in the team’s victory over the Chicago Fire. Jack Mac got the U on the board in just the third minute of play on a nice cross from Sebastien Le Toux which McInerney did a nifty…

  11. MATCHDAY: The First True Test — MacMath, Union Welcome Star-Studded Galaxy to PPL (7:30 p.m., CSN)

    May 15, 2013, 3:45 PM EDT

    Robbie Keane | Zac MacMath

In my season preview, I said this about Zac MacMath: It’s put up or shut up time for MacMath. … MacMath is immensely talented and amazingly athletic, but from where I sit, it’s time for the 21-year-old, former first-round pick to put the team on his back and win a few games on his own…

  12. Philadelphia Union striker Jack McInerney gets very high praise from Los Angeles Galaxy stars

    May 15, 2013, 11:15 AM EDT

Landon Donovan and Jack McInerney don’t know each other personally. But Donovan is certainly paying attention to what McInerney is doing this season. On Tuesday afternoon, Donovan and his Los Angeles Galaxy teammates trained at PPL Park, a day ahead of their much-anticipated clash with the Union tonight at 7:30 p.m. (Comcast SportsNet). And I…

  13. Watch Le Toux’s Sweet Setup of Jack Mac’s Game Winner in Chicago

    May 11, 2013, 5:33 PM EDT

Jack Mac scores last weekend in Chicago

It most certainly was not the prettiest of victories for the Union in Chicago this afternoon but they are the side to come away with three points. That was thanks in gigantic part to the stellar goalie work of Zac MacMath who was tested over and over on Saturday. They certainly had some luck on…

  14. MATCHDAY: Union Head to Chicago As Player Paychecks Take Center Stage (1:30 p.m. NBCSN)

    May 11, 2013, 11:30 AM EDT

Much of the fan discussion in pro sports revolves around money. Who makes the most money, who is underpaid, who is overpaid, who has a terrible contract. On WIP the other night, an entire Phillies discussion revolved around how many Phillies players were “outperforming their contract” (just one: Kyle Kendrick) and how many were “overpaid”…

  15. How One Meaningless Goal Earned Michael Farfan a Free Pass From Union Fans

    May 10, 2013, 12:59 PM EDT

It was beautiful. It inspired gasps. It appeared on highlight shows in Europe, where fans were exposed to the blue and gold of a team called “Philadelphia Union.” It was one goal in a meaningless friendly. And it has somehow earned Michael Farfan a nearly two-year free pass from Union fans. That YouTube video alone…

  16. Union, Soumare put impending break-up on hold

    May 9, 2013, 9:30 AM EDT

CHESTER, Pa. – Imagine you’re living with someone who doesn’t treat you how you think you deserve to be treated. So you tell this person you want to leave. And this person, though a little bit surprised, doesn’t want to change and decides to help you look for a new place to live. Now imagine…

  17. MATCHDAY: Effort and Will vs. Touch and Skill — the Danny Cruz problem

    May 4, 2013, 1:58 PM EDT

Much of the fan frustration in the Union so far this season — especially without Freddy Adu to kick around anymore — has been directed at midfielder Danny Cruz.

  18. Is it time for Klberson to play more for the Union?

    May 2, 2013, 12:19 PM EDT

CHESTER, Pa. – After the third consecutive question about the Brazilian World Cup winner was fired at him, Philadelphia Union manager John Hackworth paused and gave a nervous smile.

“This is a lot more Kléberson than I thought there’d be in this press conference,” he said.

He probably should have seen it coming.

  19. Portland Timbers Provide Todays Proof That The World Isnt All Bad

    May 1, 2013, 3:43 PM EDT

In a story that won’t get much attention on SportsCenter (but should), the Timbers and their fans — the Timbers Army — made an 8-year-old boy’s dream come true on Wednesday.

  20. Please Don’t Make Jack McInerney Do the Weather Report Ever Again

    Apr 29, 2013, 3:52 PM EDT

For whatever reason, there seems to be a trend of local newscasts bringing in celebrities or athletes to jump in during the weather forecast portion of the show to try and generate a few yucks while also getting a free plug for their movie/game/whatever. Mark Wahlberg was actually decent recently while in Philly. Because basically he attempted to make a fool of himself and all involved. But goal-scoring machine for the Philadelphia Union, Jack McInerney, was not trained in Hollywood. He’s trained on the soccer field. So when he appeared on CBS today to deliver the weather, it did not go as smoothly.

  21. Between the Lines: For McInerney and Casey, chemistry class in session

    Apr 26, 2013, 10:40 AM EDT

I’ve been playing soccer since I was a little kid, and watching it on TV for more than a decade at this point. But aside from one U.S. National Team game in 2009 at the Linc, I didn’t start watching soccer (not counting high school or college soccer) in person until the Union’s first home game — also at the Linc — in 2010.

After just a few games, I quickly learned how much there is to actually watch when you can see outside the boundaries of the TV screen.

So, on occasion here at The Level, I’ll try to showcase something that the average fan might not have noticed “Between the Lines.”

  22. Jack McInerney Taking Teammates’ Chicharito Nicknames in Stride

    Apr 25, 2013, 10:51 AM EDT

As soon as reporters began to crowd around Philadelphia Union striker Jack McInerney’s locker in the bowels of creaky RFK Stadium on Sunday night, the catcalls began.

“Hey, Chicharito!” “Jackarito!” “From Golden Boy to Golden Boot!”

  23. Video: Jack Mac Earns One of MLS Performers of the Week After Two-Goal Effort

    Apr 23, 2013, 1:34 PM EDT

Jack McInerney continuing his scoring tear on Sunday earned him a spot on the Top 3 MLS Performers for Week 8. I commented on Sunday about the sheer awesomeness of how cool and collected Jack Mac looked while scoring his first goal. That kind of poise seems pretty rare when a Union player gets the ball around the net. 20-years-old Jack Mac hopes to change all that. This kid has been fun to watch. Let’s hope it continues all season.

  24. Philadelphia Union to Hold Star Wars Theme Night on May 4th

    Apr 18, 2013, 4:11 PM EDT

It’s no great secret that the Union – a team which sold out nearly every game at PPL Park during its first few seasons – has a few more empty seats so far this spring. So, STAR WARS THEME NIGHT!

  25. Captain Califf returns to PPL as Union host lowly Toronto F.C.

    Apr 13, 2013, 12:13 PM EDT

In this town, we have had plenty of anticipated returns, when our one-time heroes come back to our fair city in another team’s jersey.

The days leading up to these reunions are built up with questions from fans, local media members and national media-types (all of whom are predicting boos and batteries).

Will they cheer? Will they boo? Usually, one or two writers will climb onto their nearest high horse to tell you what you should do when he comes out of the tunnel.
