The Philadelphia Union will begin their first ever playoff series against the Houston Dynamo this weekend, with game 1 in Chester on Sunday. Before the playoffs make or break what should be considered a fantastic run no matter what, we thought we would take the pulse of Union fans on what were the best and brightest moments and players on the pitch this regular season.

The Union clinched their playoff berth with a draw on Saturday which makes Thursday night’s match with the New York Red Bulls a game for postseason positioning. For the Red Bulls, however, they need a victory if they want to control their own postseason destiny.

It was a great feeling leaving PPL Park last night. Even though the Union only tied Toronto FC, 1-1, they won by earning the point they needed to clinch a playoff berth. In their second season, the U have already made it to the MLS’s exclusive postseason. That’s a tremendous source of pride for the team, from ownership to players, staff, and definitely us fans.

The Union’s Sebastian Le Toux has emerged from a first half scoring draught in a huge way, racking up 8 goals in his last nine games after scoring just one from March until August. Seven of his goals came in the six matches the U played in September.

If Jimmy Rollins thought it was quiet at Citizens Bank Park last night, he should have heard the Home Depot Center. The sparse crowd there to see the Union take on Chivas USA gives us an even better appreciation for how loud and full PPL Park is on any given game night.

The Philadelphia Union travel to the Home Depot Center to face Chivas USA as in-form goal scorers Juan Pablo Angel and Sebastien Le Toux face off.

Thursday night’s match hosting DC United had huge playoff implications for the Philadelphia Union, and they came out of the gate looking like they fully understood that.
Sebastien Le Toux continued his tear through the MLS’s second half, potting two goals in the game’s first 15 minutes. If you were late coming to PPL Park, you probably missed the first one. The U again did their best to catch the opposing backline flatfooted with the blazing fast Le Toux in motion, and it worked to precision on these two goals, which you can see in the first two minutes of the video below. Right about the 2:00 mark, you’ll see Le Toux doing his flashmob dance.
The match would stay level until the 57th minute, when Michael Farfan struck a great ball from distance, burying it in the top left corner. You can see that just after the 6:30 mark.

Heading into one of their most important matches of the season, Peter Nowak’s Union side was without several key players. No Faryd Mondragon, Freddy Adu, or Sheanon Williams against a very tough and talented Sporting KC side in their new building? Sounds like a recipe for a point-less trip.

On Saturday night, I’ll be at PPL Park for the third time in 11 days. Pretty standard stuff for your average Philadelphia Union fan. But the park got a return visit from a more notable fan yesterday, when Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk came to kick it around with Danny Califf for awhile.
The U had a custom 21 van Riemsdyk jersey waiting for him, as well as a sweet pair of Adidas Predators.

The Union needed a win pretty badly, and it looked for a long while like they were in store for an absolute thrashing, but Le Toux led an impressive second-half charge that brought them back from down 3 goals and earned them a point.

You want storylines? I’ll give you storylines. How about two teams, each winless over their last six games, facing each other? Check. A rookie keeper, drafted #5 overall, thrust into the starting lineup for the first time due to an injury to the team captain and lone MLS All-Star? Check. A rescheduled game being played mid-week thanks to a hurricane? Check.
Sep 6, 2011, 8:18 AM EST
The Union have ended the summer on a decidedly down note, winless since mid-July. To make their most recent loss, a 2-1 defeat in Salt Lake City, that much more painful, goalkeeper and team captain Faryd Mondragon fractured the ring finger on his right hand.
As you can see here, Mondragon’s headed to surgery this morning, and his tweet yesterday said he’ll be out 2-4 weeks.
Sep 3, 2011, 4:54 PM EST
Due to bad weather the Union have not played a league match in two weeks. Due to poor play the Union have not won a league game in over six weeks — going 0-2-3 over that stretch. The Union, who look to get back to their winning ways, will face Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium (9PM/The Comast Network).
