Garrett Reid Found Dead at Eagles Training Camp

Garrett Reid, the son of Eagles head coach Andy Reid, was found dead in his room at the team's Lehigh University training camp on Sunday morning. Ominous reports that coach Reid would miss this morning's walkthrough due to a personal matter surfaced via the media on twitter, including that the players had gathered in prayer; they left without speaking to the press. Soon after, GM Howie Roseman briefly and emotionally addressed the media and fans via video feed to say that Garrett Reid has been found dead. The chief of police and coroner also gave brief statements that mentioned no suspicious activity, but an investigation into Reid's passing is ongoing.
Garrett was at Lehigh assisting the team's strength coaches. He was 29 years old.
According to Roseman, Andy requested that the team continue with training camp as scheduled. Marty Mornhinweg and defensive coordinator Juan Castillo will oversee the team in Reid's absence.
Said a tearful Roseman, "He's always been strong for us. We're going to be strong for him right now. As a father and a friend, we're all hurt."
Although there is no current link between Garrett's death and drug use, anyone who has followed the Eagles during the Reid era knows the story of his sons' addictions. Garrett's battles with heroin use and pain medications became public knowledge after a series of events began to unfold more than five years ago. Andy Reid took a leave of absence to be with his family in February 2007 after Garrett was in car accident that involved drug use and injured a woman, and younger brother Britt was arrested on drug and weapon charges in a separate incident. Jail time and court-mandated rehabilitation followed, and not without event. We need not go further into all that today. Andy and Tammy Reid discussed the matter in an interview with Philadelphia Magazine in January 2008, which can be found here
Andy Reid is a man with tremendous love for his family. Our hearts are broken for him on this tragic day.
