Leonard Weaver Retired as an Eagle Today

Share

We’ve seen a number of former
Eagles coming back formally retire as a member of the team of late, from Brian
Westbrook to Tra Thomas to the great Brian Dawkins. Leonard Weaver followed
suit on Tuesday in a ceremony at the NovaCare Complex.

As DN’s Les Bowen points out
on his Eagletarian blog, it’s a bit unusual for an organization to pay tribute
to a player of Weaver’s stature. The All-Pro fullback essentially played one year
in Philadelphia before suffering a career-ending injury in the opening game of
2010.

However, GM Howie Roseman said
they were honored to recognize Weaver for what he did both on and off the field
in his short time here.

"When
you're scouting players, you're looking for players like Leonard, for what he
does not only on the field, an incredible runner, receiver, blocker, thriple
threat player -- those are hard to find. So he was a rare commodity for us, and
then off the field, the way that he was a role model for our younger players,
and how he acted with the community. We're honored that he chose to retire as a
Philadelphia Eagle," general manager Howie Roseman said.

Weaver quickly became a fan
favorite when he joined the club as a free agent from Seattle in ‘09, earning
his first trip to the Pro Bowl that year. He signed a big extension in the
offseason, but it was all over in a flash with one catastrophic helmet to his
knee.

It’s too bad it had to end
that way, but Weaver is finally at peace with his career being over. Via

"I've
accomplished a lot as a football player," Weaver said. "I was the
highest-paid fullback thanks to the Eagles organization. Also going to the Pro
Bowl, going to the Super Bowl in 2005, I'm very happy with it and I don't have
any regrets."
