The Flyers are in Raleigh to take on the Carolina Hurricanes, a meeting of four-win hockey clubs wallowing in the bottom half of a weak Metro Division. Not exactly appointment viewing for all but the most Flyered up among us.

The local sports calendar is not bereft of quality sports television programming however. The NFL Network documentary series A Football Life profiles one of Philadelphia’s all-time favorite athletes this week, the one-and-only Randall Cunningham.

Here are some details about the program via an NFL press release:

As quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles, Randall Cunningham made electrifying plays that thrilled fans on the field and helped him to achieve superstar status off it. Today, Cunningham is the founder and pastor of Remnant Ministries in Las Vegas, Nevada. Throughout his life – both on the football field and off – Cunningham has traveled a long course filled with ups and downs, glory and controversy, all of which has brought him to where he is now.

Among the topics discussed in the documentary are:

Randall’s involvement as founder and pastor of Remnant Ministries in Las Vegas, Nevada

His son Randall Cunningham II, who is a highly-recruited high school quarterback and high jumper

His 11-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles, including the unique offensive system implemented by head coach Buddy Ryan, his relationship with head coach Rich Kotite, and the 1988 ‘Monday Night Football’ game against the New York Giants

The large national attention he achieved and his teammates’ reactions to it

His retirement from the Eagles in 1995 and the 1998 season with the Minnesota Vikings in which they went 15-1 and lost in the NFC Championship Game

The tragic passing of his son

Fans may recall the excellent edition about the lives of Eagles greats Reggie White and Jerome Brown from A Football Life’s first season. Few episodes of the program have as powerful as that, but they’ve all been extremely well-produced by the great folks at NFL Films.

For many who lived and breathed the Cunningham years, this should be a fun walk down memory, but there’s little doubt it will also be a revealing portrait of the many layers of Cunningham. The program airs at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, so be sure to set your DVR.
