Quotable: Mike Vick Says Chip Kelly Taught Him How to Hold a Football

May 20, 2013, 1:16 PM EDT

“Chip told me how to run with the football the other day,” Vick said. “He taught me how to run with the football and how to carry the football, and I think it’s something that you just have to work on.”

[...]

“The other day, I broke out in the pocket, and the first thing Chip told me was to tuck the football,” Vick said. “So I showed him how I was running with it, and he looked at it and he knocked the ball right out of my hands. And he was like, ‘Hold it like this.’ And what he told me felt comfortable. I had a tighter grip on the football. That should secure that problem as long as I work on it. Like I said, you’re always a work in progress, and even when you think you know it all, sometimes you don’t. The people who feel like they know everything, they don’t.”

source: I know what you’re thinking, or at least what I’m thinking: Mike Vick has been in the NFL how long and he doesn’t know how to hold a football properly while running? I mean, it’s not entirely surprising given what we’ve seen from him putting the ball on the turf in the past, but it almost sounds like nobody told him to fix that before.

The quote comes from a story at Philly Mag by Sheil Kapadia who for a moment seemed to wonder if Vick was being facetious or serious, finally deciding that Vick was being earnest.

This really comes as no surprise.

Heck- McNabb didn’t know that if the score is tied at the end of overtime, it remains a tie in the standings.

If its that simple an it actually works, it certainly makes the past three seasons a bit more frustrating.

Is this a 700level article or a TheOnion article?

If I had a gun to my head demanding to look at the silver lining of this story, I’d say “Well, at least he didn’t say ‘Fuck you, I know what I’m doing.’ ”

    But… wow… really?

that’s awesome. maybe now he’ll just hold on to the ball instead of throwing it to the other team.

I have to say I am really not surprised, I really wonder if there was ever a coach who did teach him/tell him how to hold a football correectly when you break from the pocket. They might have all been afraid to hurt thier “star” players feelings by stating the obvisous.

But not fro nothing, Dude, for real? you didnt know to tuck the football in when you run.

Yeah, this sounds like some sports journalism BS narrative story/legend. If Vick were to play well, it’s a cause-effect story that sets up the a good post in a Chip Kelly is a genius narrative, as if an NFL HC has anything to teach an NFL skill player about holding a football. If – when – Vick sucks, it never happened.

And yet another log on the “we all know there’s no QB competition going on and we’re going to have to suffer another year of Vick” fire. I guess the Eagles need 2 high drafts anyway to really start to compete.

This is right up there with Rickey Henderson’s “framed million dollar check” story.
