Chip Kelly hates green veggies, loves beer, was once married

A fascinating profile of Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly in the Washington Post by Kent Babb reveals some rather interesting new things. The fact that jumps right off the page is that Kelly was actually married for seven years and very few people in the media or general public seemed to know this until said article was published.

Babb spoke to Kelly's former wife, Jennifer Jenkins, about what it was like to hear Kelly described as a life-long bachelor who is married to the game of football.

Kelly and Jenkins first met at the University of New Hampshire in 1989 and were married a few years later in 1992. They stayed married for seven years. Jenkins is clear to point out that it wasn't Kelly's devotion to football that put distance between them.

"For a long time they were happy, and then after a while, they weren’t," as Babb describes it.

According to Jenkins, the two have remained friends and even exchange text messages from time to time.

"Sometimes Kelly texts back immediately; other times days or weeks come and go," Babb writes.

A lot of the article focuses on Kelly demanding privacy by those close to him, so Jenkins speaking about their marriage seems to go against that. It's unclear why she thought now was the time to speak on the record about it.

Jenkins doesn't describe their situation as a secret and their marriage now being public knowledge shouldn't change anything about the way media and fans think about Chip Kelly as a football coach. But it is a surprising development.

Some other really good nuggets from the piece:

- "'There’s plenty of weirdos in the NFL,' one of Kelly’s former players says. 'He’s just a different kind of weirdo.'”

- Babb details the daily routine players have to go through when they arrive at the NovaCare Complex, "each day players were greeted at the team facility by screens revealing who had completed the morning routine — an iPad soreness and mood survey, the results of a heart-rate monitor, and of course the urine test — showing players’ head shots and a background that turned green when the daily assessment was completed."

- Players disagree on Chip's style. One NFL player describes Kelly as an Elon Musk type. That has to be Connor Barwin.

- Chip is alway inquisitive, loves to ask "why?", and was always a big fan of reading self-help books.

- Chip Kelly apparently hates green vegetables but loves beer.
