Report: Phils In Hard On 19-Year-Old OF Sensation Jorge Soler

What could be an interesting and somewhat unexpected twist to the Phillies offseason seemed to gain some steam on Wednesday as Yahoo!'s Jeff Passan tweeted that the Phillies, along with the Yankees, are the teams going the "hardest" after 19-year-old Cuban OF prospect Jorge Soler.

What could be an interesting and somewhat unexpected twist to the Phillies offseason seemed to gain some steam on Wednesday as Yahoo!’s Jeff Passan tweeted that the Phillies, along with the Yankees, are one of the teams going the “hardest” after 19-year-old Cuban OF prospect Jorge Soler.

Cespedes, who is much older at 26 and more developed than Soler, recently agreed to a four-year, $36 million deal with the Athletics.

Soler worked out for the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, and has been linked to a handful of other teams as well, but the idea of the Phillies testing the international waters is a highly intriguing one if not a bit surprising.

Then there was a post from Ken Rosenthal calling Soler the “next big thing” and added some scouts’ eye-popping reports:

Scouts say that Soler, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-handed hitter,
possesses power comparable to that of a player with a similar build,
Marlins right fielder Mike Stanton. Soler does not run as well as
Stanton, however, and ultimately could end up at first base.

A slower Mike Stanton in Philly would be just dreamy.

So take Passan’s tweets with however many grains of salt as you choose, but it’s a potential move most didn’t really see coming, but could be extremely exciting were it to pan out.

Hey, if Ruben wants to trade all his prospects for guys like Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence, he’s got to restock the cupboard somehow. You know how Rube hates an empty cupboard.

Going shopping at the really expensive International store is one way.
