G and Dylan Reese were exchanging stickwork just prior, but the factor most likely causing Giroux to engage was that his team had zero spark for most of the night. They were trailing 2-0 and being badly outplayed by a team sitting in last place in the Atlantic, and he decided it was time to toss the mitts.
Giroux has had trouble finding the net recently, but he tried to light the fire another way. While it was fun for fans and his team responded at least acutely, it's not exactly a situation you want your best player in, particularly if he's had a concussion recently. Still gotta give him the stick taps for trying though.
