Go Figure: John Tortorella Doesn’t Much Care for the ‘Whining’ Pens Either

There's just so very little that's likable about John Tortorella. Except, of course, for when he's ripping the Penguins. Then he seems like a lovely guy.

You know that whole “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” bit? Well, look, we’ll never be friends with the New York Rangers, nor, for that matter, John Tortorella. But from the sounds of it, he and Peter Laviolette seem to have more in common than their win totals as American-born coaches.

Like Nick Grossmann thanks to Joe Vitale, Rangers defenseman Derek Stepan went knee-to-knee with the Penguins’ Brooks Orpik last night, prompting this tirade from Tortorella:
“I wonder what would happen if we did it to their two whining stars over there,” Tortorella said.
“It’s one of the most arrogant organizations in the league. They whine about this stuff all the time and look what happens.”
“But they’ll whine about something else over there won’t they? Starting with their two (expletive) stars.”
Former Flyer Marty Biron’s comments were even closer to Lavy’s:

“I saw it the whole way and it crossed my mind to go all the way down (the ice after him),” Biron said. “It was gutless, dirty. That guy is known for sticking his leg out. He’s going to continue to do that unless somebody either gets him with a suspension or whatever. It’s very dangerous.”

It was Laviolette who called Penguins coach Dan Bylsma “gutless” after last Sunday’s matinee that saw a late-game appearance by the Pens fourth line put Danny Briere on the shelf indefinitely.

As for the Pens’ elite, Flyers assistant coach Craig Berube pre-empted Torts’ comments about the team’s “whining stars” earlier this week when he referred to Evgeni Malkin and Sindey Crosby as the dirtiest players on the Pittsburgh roster. After watching Geno punch G in the back of the head last weekend and Sid slash everything that moved, we’re not real thrilled with them either.
For Flyers fans, there’s just so very little that’s likable about John Tortorella. Except, of course, for when he’s ripping the Penguins. Then he seems like a lovely guy.
