Fun fact: in the NHL, two points are awarded for a win, one
point is awarded for a tie at the end of regulation, and the teams with the highest
number of points at the end of the regular season are entered into a tournament.
Philadelphia doesn’t have an automatic berth in the playoffs or anything like
that.

The Flyers seem to be aware of this, at least they’ve talked
about it a lot on a number of occasions. Unfortunately the NHL does not award
two points based on having the locker room that talked the most about winning that
night, or else the Flyers might be in first place in the Atlantic Division
right now.

Instead they are in last place, and the most positive storyline
you could find about the team on Friday was, “Well, they’re kind of sort of not
quite out of it yet technically,” which really is all anyone can say. Philly is
only five points out of the eight seed with 20 games left to play, so postseason
hockey is still very much a reality at this point – you know, if things ever
turn around.

What expectations would be like in May, that’s something
else entirely. To even get that far, the Flyers are going to have to tune out
all the trade rumors and calls to fire the head coach over the next month. Winning
sometimes would help, too. Ending a seven-game losing streak against the Devils
that dates back to last year’s playoffs would even be a nice start.

It would’ve been a nice start back on Wednesday as well.

So here we go, Flyers. That’s about the extent of the
enthusiasm we can muster right this moment, because while you’re not finished
just yet, you certainly look and sound like a team that is headed for an early
tee time.
