Ilya Bryzgalov Flies Off In Style, By Congratulating Philly Media, Hanging Up On Reporter

Jun 25, 2013, 1:20 PM EDT

His work in net never lived up to the hype. His words off the ice were often hilarious and wildly entertaining. With the Flyers buying out Ilya Bryzgalov’s contract today, all we’re left with are a few space quotes and memories of bears.

At least he went out in style by hanging up on Philly reporters on his way out of town.

Miss you already, Bryz.

Analysis of the actual hockey move coming in a few minutes…

Well, frankly, you have to be kind of a jackass to call back after getting hung up on the first time. What part of that first conversation says, “Call me back,” to you?

Furthermore, tweeting stuff like this is exactly why Bryz never liked talking to the media in the first place. Just say “Bryzgalov couldn’t be reached for comment” when you write your story. Don’t run off to Twitter with this crap.

Well, the problem with doing it that way is he was reached for comment. A childish, blame-deflecting comment.

Ok well how about “Bryzgalov would not comment when reached”? Haha. I dunno, I was never a Bryz fan but this is the microcosm of his relationship with the media here.

The jokes on the Philly media. They’ll have to make up some new Flyers story lines.

For someone thats quick to point out someone being a jerk, you continued to harras the guy by calling more then once after knowing he did not want to talk. But hey you needed to be able to say he hung up on you twice right…

Please continue to repeatedly call him back just to p#ss everyone off some more, it’s entertaining reading for sure and as far as I’m concerned it’s gonzo journalism.

Philadelphia-area sports media are Gonzo journalists only insofar as they insert themselves into the story and thus get away from the purely objective stance of traditional journalism. But Gonzo journalism is supposed to be after the truth of the subject matter. While the writer is a part of the story, the truth is actually revealed through what actually happens. Guys like Miller create a narrative to push an agenda, and this is the result.

Bryzgalov never lived up to that contract, and ultimately never would have had a chance to do so. This is mainly because he’s slightly above league-average at best. However, he was ultimately doomed by the media and fan base (especially the WIP crowd) the day he signed it. Now he knows how much they hate the goalies.

Congrats, you are everything wrong with this city’s sports journalists.

Randy Miller is the worst of the worst. He makes Tim Panaccio look like Bob Woodward by comparison.
