Ilya Bryzgalov's Throwback Winter Classic Goalie Pads

Share

The one-off unique aspect of the Winter Classic continues to provide us with sights and sounds we're not typically accustomed to: new masks, Bernie Parent in net, and today we get to see goalie pads made to look all leathery and old-fashioned.

CSN's Sarah Baicker tweeted the live-action shot of Bob in net during practice today in Tampa rocking some special Winter Classic goalie pads.

Flyers fan Jarred Phillips followed that up by showing off the close-up shots you see of Ilya Bryzgalov's pads, blocker, and gloves made by Vaughn that he'll likely wear for the big game at Citizens Bank Park.

Call me crazy, but doesn't that special glove look an awful lot like a catcher's mitt / first baseman's glove?

We asked Phillips if he had any more info on the retro look seen in the photos and he shared the following:
The pattern on the pads is a fairly stock Vaughn retro design, the same
one Carey Price wore last year before he moved to Reebok this season.

What makes them unique is the straps on the front. I would guess that
they are only there to make them look more retro and don't serve any
functional purpose. I don't know that I have ever seen them on other
retro Vaughn sets before, certainly not in the NHL.

Why three sets of gloves? I would doubt that he'll switch each period.
Maybe he does, but I would think they're just dried after each like
players' gloves. They all need to be broken in over a short period, so I
would think he'd play in the glove and blocker he likes best. Maybe
he'll auction the other two.

Or maybe he wears one during warmups and then they can auction it off as "game-worn" at the Winter Classic.

Either way, part of the fun of this one-time event at Citizens Bank Park is all the fun little details like goalie pads and gloves that look almost like a catcher's mitt.
