Kind of Awkward: Peter Laviolette to Assist Dan Bylsma as Olympic Coach in Sochi

Jul 23, 2013, 12:47 PM EDT

Well this makes for an interesting pairing.

Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette will assist Penguins’ coach Dan Bylsma for the American team at the Sochi Olympics in Russia next year. As CSN’s Tim Panaccio points out, Lavy has plenty of Olympic experience. He also has a bit of a history with Bylsma from that epic playoff series and game leading into it in 2012.

“It should be interesting to have all three in such close quarters on the bench given the incident in Pittsburgh on Apr. 1, 2012, when Laviolette, Bylsma and Granato exchanged words in the final 1:03 of a 6-4 Flyers’ win.”

No Flyers are likely on Team USA. Claude Giroux will rep for Canada while a couple of other Philadelphia players will likely rep their respective countries: Kimmo Timonen (Finland), Erik Gustafsson (Sweden), Nicklas Grossmann (Sweden), Andrej Meszaros (Slovakia), Jakub Voracek (Czech), Mark Streit (Switzerland).

i don’t see a problem. both are competitors. both want to win.

stuff like this happens in hockey all the time-enemies on the ice work together in the olympics.

Yep, hockey players and coaches get into it and get over it quickly, especially when they have to work together.

Great graphic, very Mad Men-esque. Should get that printed on a t-shirt or something.

Great, this ensures the team will not medal. I was hoping for Ron Wilson again.

It’s probably just me but Pierre McGuire’s silhouette is cracking me up.
