NHL Releases 2013-14 Schedule, Flyers to Play in “Metropolitan Division”

The NHL decided to keep the name Atlantic Division in their realignment. Unfortunately, the Flyers and their main rivals are no longer a part of it.

When the puck drops in Philadelphia on October 2, the Orange & Black will be competing for the Metropolitan Division championship. That’s the name of the new grouping that features the rest of the clubs from the former Atlantic (Rangers, Devils, Isles, and Pens) plus the Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Washington Capitals.

Flyers Insider Anthony SanFilippo probably summed up the reaction to the ridiculous name the best:

Anyway, with that business aside, the news on division names was part of a much larger announcement for the NHL’s 2013-14 schedule. As noted above, the Flyers will open the season on October 2 at the Wells Fargo Center versus the Toronto Maple Leafs. The regular season wraps up on April 13. The playoffs begin April 16.

In between, the league will break from February 9 through 25 for the Olympics.

The way the schedule works under realignment, the Flyers will play five games against two division opponents (Pens and Caps), and four against the rest. They’ll meet the remaining teams in the Eastern Conference three times a piece, and two against everyone in the West.

Also of note: training camp opens on September 12, and the Flyers will play their first of seven exhibition games on September 15.

The Flyers’ full schedule can be viewed here. Okay, enough about that. Yay or nay on Metro Division?
