Video: Zac Rinaldo racks up 27 penalty minutes in 4 seconds of ice time

Dec 7, 2013, 8:00 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers’ uneven play continued on Saturday. Three days after upending the Detroit Red Wings 6-3, the Bullies were pummeled by the Dallas Stars 5-1, preventing their latest bid to climb above the .500 mark on Saturday.

Obviously, this loss can be blamed on the orange and black having to go without Zac Rinaldo for essentially the entire contest. (That’s sarcasm.) Rinaldo was kicked out of the game barely one minute after the puck dropped for jumping Stars forward Antoine Roussel.

Why the ban? It probably had something to do with the fact that Rinaldo had only been on the ice for four seconds and appeared to be completely unprovoked.

Rinaldo hopped on to the rink, chased down Roussel, dropped the gloves and started punching him in the face. When his victim fell to the ice surface to cover up, Rinaldo took one last swing before officials arrived on the scene and separated the two.

We have no idea what led to the attack. Per CSN’s Tim Panaccio, Rinaldo did not speak to reporters after the game.

In all, Rinaldo racked up 27 minutes worth of penalties—two for instigating, five for fighting, 20 more with a pair misconducts. Amazingly, the Flyers managed to kill the seven-minute power play that ensued.

The wheels would come off in the second period though. Dallas found the back of the net four times, including a hat trick for center Tyler Seguin. Three of the Stars’ four goals were separated by a total of 1:02 on the clock.

It was the first time in 28 games as a member of the Flyers that netminder Steve Mason surrendered more than three goals in an outing.

Kimmo Timonen left the game in the second period with an injury.

This was the fourth time the Flyers had a chance to go above .500 and failed. They are 3-4-0 over the last seven.

Doesn’t look like there’s too many people there! I’ll go out on a limb and say the Dallas Stars must not be that popular a hockey team!! : P

    • J Stuart - Dec 7, 2013 at 10:49 PM

You must not follow Hockey. Yes the Stars have not been in the playoffs for 3 straight years, but their popularity with the local fans are fine and have had several sell outs (19,099) this year and I’ve been to two games where there were over 18,000. You must not pay attention to National News either. Dallas is in the middle of one of the worst Ice Storms to hit the U.S in ten years. There were hundreds of Road closures and it was sleeting most of the day. So if you think that Dallas does not have fans, you’re wrong. They are just not all wanting to risk their lives to see a Hockey game.

Sorry excuse. Yeah, we know you guys got snow. Big deal. We drive in that crap all the time, to all the games. What is it in Big D? Go big or go home. Yeah well, looks like your folks took the latter. Oh, and congrats on the 3 years in a row, bravo. Real hardcore fan base you got there. Minnesota are the North Stars dummy, you shouldn’t have a hockey team. They go to the games no matter what, so shut the hell up.

The difference between what you think we get down here and what actually happens is that it doesnt snow like yall say it does. It ices. The roads have 1-2 inches of ice on them and we are not prepared for that kind of road conditions because our government does not need to keep a stable of snow plows employed. I know some great hockey fans here. I love the stars and so does thousands of others around here. Mick, you should shut the hell up. Talk like that in Texas doesnt fly.

    • mike - Dec 8, 2013 at 1:25 AM

I’m more concerned about why the Flyers didn’t show up for the 2nd period.

      • mickthedick - Dec 8, 2013 at 12:44 PM

they are blaming the weather cos they couldn’t practice friday. pussies. i thought they “drive in this crap all the time because we’re from up north”. hypocrite tards.

    • mickthedick - Dec 8, 2013 at 12:40 PM

idiots. ice storm closed most of the roads in dfw. we did not get snow, just ice. dfw doesn’t have the equipment like northern states have to treat the roads since we only get ice once a year. pull your fist out of your ass and pay attention.

    • braindead - Dec 8, 2013 at 7:10 PM

Do your home work prick head, Dallas had a bad ice storm there was even talk of moving the game. it was a bad storm and Dallas was basically shut down . it was officially a sell out. before you make idiot comments do your home work.

      butthurt? LOL

  3. BenE. - Dec 8, 2013 at 2:58 AM

The ref went WAY overboard with the penalties. Should have been two for roughing, and two for unsportsmanlike. TOPS. Roussel is a coward. I’ll bet the house he was running his mouths in warmups like the rat he is.

    • Marvin Monroe - Dec 8, 2013 at 12:11 PM

After the shitshow in the Penguins-Bruins game last night, I have an better appreciation for the refs in the Flyers game yesterday. That was the exact way not to handle a game.

    • mickthedick - Dec 8, 2013 at 12:47 PM

trash talking in hockey? NOOOOOOOOOOO WAAAAAAYYYYYY.

    • t800m101 - Dec 8, 2013 at 2:45 PM

If Orpik would have dropped his gloves and fought Thornton when he was challenged, the mess that transpired never would have happened. That said, it was a very unfortunate circumstance. I hope Orpik recovers well soon.

      • BenE. - Dec 8, 2013 at 4:26 PM

Orpik his fine, he hopped off the stretcher when they got outside the stadium and he greeted his teammates at the airport, where they shared many laughs about their most recent cheap shots.

      • Pipes - Dec 9, 2013 at 8:29 AM

Orpik never had to dance with Thorton. Since when is delivering a clean check becoming something you had to fight over?

      • t800m101 - Dec 9, 2013 at 2:29 PM

Orpik threw a questionable hit On Eriksson. When you throws hits like that you should be held accountable at times. Too bad Orpik has the gloves cemented on.

  4. t800m101 - Dec 8, 2013 at 11:30 AM

Typical new NHL completely overreacting on a call. I can see a double minor for roughing, that’s it. I like Roussel, but he looked like a total pussy covering up like that, you know your role, live up to it. Also, about time Rinaldo shows some emotion.

    • mickthedick - Dec 8, 2013 at 12:46 PM

      waaaaaaaaa! crying like a baby

  5. ericsaxon35 - Dec 9, 2013 at 5:49 PM

LOL, Flyers at it again. Can’t play hockey, so they fight and show their impotence as a team for the world to see. Boo hoo.
